A collection of letters, news clippings & memos. Examples are: Two letters (7/11 & 7/15/57) from John F. Borchers (General Manager, S.D. Chamber of Commerce) & Wilson’s replies (7/11 & 7/18/57) re/ response to Wilson’s “four general suggestions concerning San Diego’s position with respect to the Navy in this area;” 1 letter (12/5/57) from Ralph J. Phillips (Pres., S.D. Chamber of Commerce) & attached copy of “General Manager’s Recommendations on Military Affairs Program of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce . . . . submitted to the Board of Directors on November 27, 1957” by John F. Borchers re/ such items as “Docking facilities for Forrestal Class carriers . . . South Bay Seadrome and deepening of South Bay Channel . . . Channel into south end of the Bay [through Silver Strand] . . . aircraft drydock at Naval Station . . . [&] Deepening of harbor channel to Coronado tube;” 1 letter (1/30/57) from John F. Borchers to Wilson re/ a criticism of a “proposed [Treasury Dept.] regulation which would prohibit deduction from gross income of expenditures for: A. advocating or opposing legislation--B. advocating or opposing initiative or referendum measures—C. dues paid to non-taxable trade associations (such as chambers of commerce) which carry on legislation activities for their members;” small, stapled packet containing letters (3/58) from Congressman Wilson, George W. Sears (Chairman, Phil D. Swing Testimonial Committee) & attached news clipping “Luncheon Set to Honor Phil Swing,” Evening Tribune (3/11/58) re/ “Testimonial Scheduled For State Water Leader;” 1 letter (3/18/58) from Robert L. Black (Pres., S.D. Chamber of Commerce) re/ Bd. of Dir. meeting (3/12/58) favoring “the repeal of the Federal Excise Transportation Taxes” which are “3 % on property and 10% on passenger transportation;” 1 letter (5/19/58) from Ralph J. Phillips (Chairman Nat. Affairs Committee, S.D. Chamber of Commerce) & Wilson’s reply (5/29/58) re/ the chamber’s opposition to H.R,. 8525—“National Gas Act Amendments 1957”—which would expand federal interstate commerce regulation of specific aspects of the natural gas industry; 1 letter (5/19/58) from Robert L. Black (Pres., S.D. Chamber of Commerce) & Wilson’s reply (5/29/58) “urging a repeal of wartime excise taxes;” 1 letter (10/10/58) from Robert L. Black & Wilson reply (10/17/58) re/ opposition of the chamber to agricultural price supports—they should “be eliminated as rapidly as may be feasible;” 3 stapled packets of legal size pages containing the following: 1—“this is the 1957 Supplement—the list of contributors from the CoCent-Comm-Fletcher file only . . . .” (4 pp.), 2—“this is the 1958 combined list of contributors—i.e., the Wilson names, + the CoCent-Comm-Fletcher list . . . .” (21 pp.), & 3—“this is the Ch.of Comm. list which I broke down running alphabetical instead of number of employers employing 50 or over. . . .” (13 pp.).
