Scope and Contents

A small collection of memorandums, letters, indexes & bulletins. Examples are: Packet of letters (Dec. 1962-Jan. 1963) from Congressman Wilson, Donald J. Brewer (Dir., Art Center, La Jolla) & attached copy of “First Annual Art Exhibition & Fiesta of Mexican Cultural Events” (4 pp.) re/ description of the proposed event & listing of support from San Diegans in the cultural and art community; copies of four letters (1/18/63) from Congressman Wilson re/ his mailing of Keywords Index to U.S. Government Technical Reports (U.S. Dept. of Commerce, 1963) to electronic manufacturers in San Diego; 1 letter (2/6/63) from Charles E. Porter & Wilson’s reply (2/11/63) re/ requested info. on Naval Academy & other personal matters; “Memorandum For File” (3/12/63) re/ hiring by Mayor Dail & the City of San Diego of “a lobbyist to assist in obtaining [building projects] . . . involving Federal contracting” & comments on rivalry between Congressmen Van Deerlin and Wilson to obtrain these federal contracts for San Diego; 1 letter (3/18/63) from Juan Rivera Rosario & attached copy of “Build San Diego With Juan Rivera Rosario The Choice of people for MAYOR in 1963 How to Build San Diego into an Ideal City” re/ his extensive plans for San Diego if elected, and his stirring anti-communist pleas; stapled copies of letters & a “Memorandum For File” (Mar.-Ap. 1963) from Edgar M. Gillenwaters (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.) & Milton F. Fillus, Jr. (Ex. V.P., Westgate-California Corp.) re/ further political discussions on the lobbyist (“fresh out of the Kennedy Administration”) hired by Mayor Dail & the City of San Diego; 1 copy of a “Memorandum To Marge From Ed” (4/10/63), office note from Marge & news clipping “Engle Lauds All America Title for S.D.” (Copley News Service, n.d.) re/ “Article Naming City Placed in Congress Record” by Senator Engle; copies of memorandum, news clipping & telegram (4/63) from Ed Gillenwaters & Congressman Wilson re/ complaints because Wilson had not been contacted by the City of San Diego, the Chamber of Commerce & other functionaries “advising him or inviting his participation in the events surrounding San Diego’s receipt of the All American City Award;” 1 copy of a letter (4/23/63) from Wilson to RADM C.C. Hartman (Ret.) & attached copy of “San Diego All-American City” brochure with note from Marge to Ed re/ “Sending All-American City Flag;” packet containing 1 letter (4/26/63) from Irene H. Stratton (City Clerk, City of National City), Wilson’s reply (5/2/63) & attached copy of “Resolution No. 8355 ‘Urging Location of Federal Field Laboratory and Research Facility In The San Diego Area” (unanimous adoption—4/23/63); 1 letter (5/21/63) from E. M. Thompson (Managing Dir., CONTACTUS) & attached brochure re/ a personalized service company for San Diegans in the area of recording, typing and other activities; 2 issues of San Diego Economic Bulletin (Vol. 11, Nos. 1 & 4, Jan. & Ap. 1963); 4 issues of The San Diego Union-Tribune Index (Vol. XIV, Nos. 1, 2, 3 & 4, Jan.- Ap., 1963).
