Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memorandums, telegrams, news items and transcript of meeting held on 20, July 1955. Examples are: letters (Feb.-Mar. 1956) from Congressman Wilson, RAdm. R.J. Arnold (Chief of Bureau, Bureau of Supplies and Accounts) & Morris Slayen (Slayen’s Furniture Repair) re/ Camp Elliot’s prison camp rehab/furniture repair shop in “competition with private concerns;” 1 letter (12/30/55) from J.W. Canaan (Public Relations, Fed Mart, Inc.), Wilson’s reply (1/13/56) & attached copy of Fed Mart News (Jan. 1956) re/ Wilson’s position on monopolies, his news story in The San Diego Union (12/22/55) criticizing discount houses selling gasoline “at prices below those which dealers are able to operate” & Mr. Canaan’s critique of Wilson’s newspaper commentary; one copy of a letter (11/16/55) from Congressman Wilson & attached letters (11/10/55 & 11/7/55) from George S. George A. Holderness, Jr. (Chief of Industrial Relations, Dept. of the Navy), Wm. K. Burke (S.D. County, Painters & Decorators Joint Committee, Inc.) & F.N. Tritchkea (Painting Contractor) re/ “painters who are working in Government Civil Service jobs taking work outside of their regular employment & competing with private enterprise; packet containing letters (Dec. 1953) from Congressman Wilson, RAdm. M.L. Royar (Chief of Bureau of Supplies and Accounts), Capt. J.E. Wolowsky (Commanding Officer, Naval Supply Depot, San Diego), E.F. Terrar, Jr. (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.) & Guy M. Barnes (Manager, S.D. Branch, The Union Ice Co.) re/ controversy over potential competition for the Union Ice Co., if “the proposed conversion by the Navy of an old building on the compound of the Naval Supply Depot . . . for a cold storage plant involving some $700,000” takes place.
