Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memos, memorandums, telegrams, USAF contract award notices, news clippings and other related materials. Examples are: Stapled copies of letters (12/61-1/62) from Congressman Wilson, Colonel Robert H. McCutcheon (Acting Dir. for Procurement Policy, USAF) & constituent Johnie M. May re/ petition from Convair employees as sent to President Kennedy by Wilson, stressing unemployment in the San Diego aircraft industry; copies of letters, memo & Western Union telegram (1/62) from Wilson, Federick G. Dutton (Asst. Sec., Dept. of State) & constituent Jack McMahan re/ proposal to sell “Convair [880] aircraft to South American companies and governments and use U.S. Export Import Bank loans to help;” a large packet of Dept. of the Air Force contract award notices sent to Wilson (1/5-3/5/62) indicating awards to General Dynamics (Astronautics and Convair Divisions) for Atlas, F-106, TFX programs and to Ryan Aeronautical for Q-2c aerial target drones for a total of over 110 million dollars; 2 letters (2/16/62) from Donald H. Vance (Executive V.P., The Korfund Company, Inc.) re/ hospitality of Congressman Wilson & info. on “Shock Isolation for Atlas Type E Pivot Mount;” 1 letter (2/9/62) from R.T. Blair, Jr. (Manager of Community Relations, Astronau-tics) & Wilson’s reply (2/16/62) re/ Wilson’s visit to Astronautics & photographs taken at the time; 1 news clipping, The San Diego Union, 2/23/62, a21 re/ “Lewis Takes Over Top Post At Dynamics” & “ ‘Sell S.D.’ Plan Told By Wilson;” copies of 2 letters (2/14 & 2/24/62) from Milton H. Ivens, M.D. & Wilson’s reply (3/6/62) re/ Doctor Iven’s suggestions as to General Dynamics-Convair to stimu-late new manufacturing jobs in the S.D. area, eliminate graft in foreign aid & export pre fabricated housing for the “ ‘peon’ level” abroad; 1 memo (3/7/62) from constituent Mrs. Virginia W. Hoisington, II to Wilson & attach-ed copy of a “Press Release” (3/19/62) from Colonel Smith (USAF) re/ F-111A (TFX) aircraft & design competition; copies of 7 Dept. of Air Force contract award notices (4/6-5/9/62) sent to Wilson indicating awards to General Dynamics-Astronautics Div. & Cubic Corp. for the ATLAS programs totalling $32 million; office memo (5/22/62) re/ F4H (F-110) “split into 12 packages;” a 5/16/62 “Memorandum For File Re/ Contract: NASA To: General Dynamics—Award this date for advanced electro propulsion technology for $115,185 cost plus fixed contract;” copies of 6 Dept. of Air Force contract award notices (5/17-6/28/62) sent to Wilson indicating awards to General Dynamics-Astronautics Div. & Lockeed California Co. for global tracking network, quick engine change kits for . . . engines used on C-121, ATLAS missile systems & test facilities totalling $25 million; 1 letter (6/29/62) from R.T. Blair, Jr. (Manager of Community Relations, Astro-nautics) re/ recently published book about the development of the ATLAS was being sent to Wilson; 2 Dept. of Air Force contract award notices (7/13/62) sent to Wilson re/ General Dynamics-Astronautics for ATLAS systems totalling over $16 million; 1 Western Union telegram (8/3/62) from Henry Schultz (Chief Negotiator) re/ General Dynamics contract negotiations with Engineers and Architects Assoc.; copies of letters (7/23/62 & 8,6,7 & 15/62) from J.G. Sheldon (Traffic Admin. Supervisor, General Dynamics-Convair) & Wilson’s replies re/ “Senate Bill 2560, the Gray Area Bill, passed by the United States Senate on 29 June 1962;” 1 letter (8/6/62) from R.T. Blair, Jr. (Astronautics) & Wilson’s reply (8/20/62) re/ a copy of the June issue of Fortune magazine—“it does an excellent job of explaining the intricacies and achievements of the nation’s space effort;” 2 Dept. of Air Force contract award notices (10/16/62) sent to Wilson re/ General Dynamics-Astronautics ATLAS missiles totalling $2 million; 1 letter (12/28/62) from R..T.
