A small collection of telegrams, letters, & news clippings. Examples are; 1 letter (1/6/53) from constituent J.H. Schoenberger & Wilson’s reply (1/13/53) re/ “a congested condition existing at the Mexican border at San Ysidro. There are only 2 gates for an average of 10,000 cars. They are lined up 4 deep in 2 directions for over a half a mile, taking one hour and 30 minutes of engine running idle before we get through the gate;” 1 Western Union telegram (1/20/53) re/ Mr. Furlow’s recommendation that Mr. Frank Thornton be appointed as Collector of Customs at San Diego; 1 letter (1/30/53) from constituent Colonel Waldron J. Irving Salomen U.S. Representative of the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations” & a listing of 18 prominent San Diegans who “enthusiastically endorse Col. Salomen;” 2 news clippings from the Copley Press Leased Wire (3/30 & 4/1/53) by Frank McComber, “Senators Back Frank Thornton For Customs Job;” a copy of a letter (3/28/53) from Senators Knowland & Kuchel to Sec. of the Treasury George M. Humphry, 1 letter (3/30/53) from Sen. Knowland to Congressman Wilson & Wilson’s reply to Knowland (4/2/53) re/ recommending Frank A. Thornton “For the position of Collector of Customs for the Port of San Diego;” a letter (4/2/53) from R.E. Hazard to Sen. Kuchel, “on behalf of our United Republican Finance Committee and hundreds of good Republicans, including many Democrats who worked with us, we wish to thank you . . .” for Mr. Thornton’s appointment as Collector of Customs; 1 letter (4/8/53) from constituent Mrs. Mildred H. Sandknop & Wilson’s reply (4/16/53) thanking Mrs. Sandknop for a copy of her letter to Senator Knowland recommending the appointment of Frank Thornton as Collector of Customs at San Diego; 1 copy of a letter ( 4/22/53) from Ed Terrar (Admin. Asst. to Wilson) to Frank Thornton re/ the selection of “a Deputy Collector there in San Diego” & info. on pay scales; 1 Western Union telegram (n.d.) from Wilson to Thornton re/ “Bottleneck in evaluation FBI reports” delaying the announcement of Thornton’s appointment; 1 news clipping—Frank Macomber, “Right-of-Way Asked To Old Border Gate,” Copley Press Leased Wire, 5/7/53, re/ Gate 2 at San Ysidro & Wilson’s preference to let the new Collector of Customs decide this issue; 1 Western Union telegram (5/20/53) from Stanley Grove (Manager, S.D. Chamber of Commerce) & Wilson’s reply (5/27/53) re/ inconvenience of delay in Thornton’s appointment to a Border Cities Conference to be held on June 8-9 in Tijuana; copies of letters (Feb.& Mar. 1954) from the Commissioner of Public Bldgs. ( GSA), Frank Thornton (Collector of Customs) & Congressman Wilson re/ “the proposed expansion of customs facilities at the port of San Ysidro;” 1 copy of a 9 page letter from Collector of Customs Thornton & others re/ “a survey has been made of the export control and general inspectional activities within the San Diego collection district, with the objective of . . . possible savings in manpower . . . in meeting the obligation of its limited budgetary situation.”
