A collection of govern-ment reports, maps, letters, memorandums & other items. Examples are: 2 copies of the “Report On Certain United States Government Property Sought By The City of San Diego, California, Said Property Having Been Acquired For The Diversion Of The San Diego River From San Diego Into False Bay In 1876 (Now Mission Bay) No Longer Serving The Public Purpose For Which Acquired And Having Been Superseded By The San Diego River Floodway,” as prepared by Mission Bay Project Office, City Engineering Dept., San Diego, April 1951, & includes text, exhibits—map of “San Diego DykeLand Acquired For San Diego River (Oct. 1940), photos & 1 photocopy of original 1876 document from City Archives, 21 pp.; copies of 3 letters (Aug. 1952) from O.W. Campbell (San Diego City Manager) & John J. Shipley (Acting Chief, Real Estate Div., Los Angeles Dist. Office, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers) re/ “three placer mining claims on the San Diego River Dike Lands, acquired by the federal government in 1876,” as filed by Mr. James J. Delaney on May 14, 1951. The Corps of Engineers noted that these lands “are not subject to appropriation and do not come within the purview of the mining laws.” Mr. Delaney’s placer claims were “improper and invalid from inception;” copies of 3 letters (Dec. 1952) from Congressman Clinton D. McKinnon & O.W. Campbell (S.D. City Manager) re/ H.R. 6534, which “will expire with this Congress” & suggesting that the “new Congressman from San Diego, Mr. Robert Wilson,” re-introduce the bill in the next congressional session; a copy of Congressman Wilson’s letter (1/16/53) to City Manager Campbell & attached copy of H.R. 1613 . . . A Bill To provide for the conveyance of certain lands in San Diego, California, to the City of San Diego, Jan. 13, 1953 (6 pp.); copies of letters (Feb. 1953) from Congressman Wilson, James J. Delaney, City Manager Campbell & attached news clipping—“Wilson Introduces Bill Deby Dike Returned To City Is Asked,” Evening Tribune, Jan. 19, 1953 re/ Mr. Delany’s placer claims & reconciling the federal government’s position with H.R. 1613 terminology; photocopy of a letter (3/5/53) from Congressman Dewey Short (Chairman, Armed Services Committee) to Wilson re/ “your request of March 4 for a hearing on your bill, H.R. 1613;” 1 letter (3/13/53) from James J. Delaney & Wilson’s reply (3/20/53) re/ Mr. Delany’s “position in regard to the Derby Dike;” copies of corresp. (5/53) from Congressmen Dewey Short & George A. Dondero & Armed Services Com. Legal counsel Philip W. Kelleher re/ H.R. 1613; 1 fold out map, “San Diego Dyke” (May 1953) & stapled copy of “San Diego River Dyke Lands,” “Perimeter Description of Surplus Lands,” Parcel No. 1- No. 6 (6/5 & 6/6/53); 1 letter (9/17/53) from S.D. Terrar, Jr. re/ discussion of the appraisal of the 31.31 acre Derby Dyke property & H.R. 1613 conveyance to the City of San Diego; copies of letters & 1 telegram (9/55 & 11/55) from Al E. Snyder (Asst. Admin., GSA), E.W. Blom (Acting City Manager, San Diego), Edmund F. Mansure (Administrator, GSA) & Congressman Wilson re/ appraisals of the value of the Derby Dyke property; 1 letter (11/17/55) from Congressman Wilson to City Manager Campbell & attached copy of a letter (11/15/55) from Al E. Snyder (Asst. Admin., GSA) re/ revised evaluation of 31.31 acre Derby Dyke parcel from $176,300 to $163,050; 1 letter (11/23/55) from S.D. City Manager Campbell to Wilson thanking him “for your good help with reference to the dyke property . . . . The City Council yester-day approved its purchase” & 1 Western Union telegram (11/23/55) from Wilson to Campbell enquiring about the appraisal & the “Navy Truck Depot opposite Midway Drive In Theater.”
