A collection of letters & telegrams. Examples are: 1 letter (3/11/54) from Surgeon General Leonard A. Schueler (HEW) to Congressman Wilson re/ cost est. for Sharp Hospital-- $3, 918,848.08 & est. federal share $270,247 – 167 beds; 1 letter (3/11/55 from Douglas Young (Pres., San Diego Hospital Assn.) to Wilson re/ invitation “to attend the Dedication of the Donald N. Sharp Memorial Community Hospital on Saturday, April 2, 1955” & background information on the hospital’s inception in 1946, six years of planning & fund raising efforts to completion of a 250-bed hospital at a cost of approx. $4.5 million; 1 letter (3/12/55) from Frank R. McDougall (Superintendent, S.D. Hospital Assn.) re/ sending Wilson “enclosed letters, with Fact Sheets, to you for distribution in Washington;” copies of 4 letters (3/25/55) from Congressman Wilson to Bryce N. Harlow (Admin. Asst. to the President), Congressman James B. Utt, Senators Kuchel & Knowland & Miss Dorothy Cox (Secretary to Vice President Nixon) requesting a letter or a telegram to be read at the Donald N. Sharp Hospital dedication cere-mony in April; 1 letter (3/29/55) from George A. Scott (Chairman, Dedication Week Committee, S.D. Hospital Assn.) extending an invitation to Wilson “to participate in the Dedication Services at the hospital to give Presentation of Flag and Pledge of Allegiance,” & attached copy of a Western Union telegram (3/31/55) from Wilson to Scott confirming his attendance. He would be “bringing flag and greetings from Eisenhower, Nixon, Knowland, Kuchel and Utt;” 1 letter (3/30/55) from Senator William F. Knowland to Congressman Wilson & attached copy of the Senator’s letter (3/30/55) to S.D. Hospital Assn.’s Douglas Young offering “congratulations to the public-spirited citizens of San Diego who formed the . . . Association” to help create the Sharp Hospital; 1 letter (4/8/55) from Douglas Young to Wilson thanking him for his participation in the Dedication Services; a small packet containing letters (3/56) from Congressman Wilson & Leslie Gehres (Ryan Aeronautical Co.), attached copy of Frank R. McDougall (Superintendent, Donald N. Sharp Memorial Hospital) to Sharp Hospital Bd. of Directors & photocopy of plot plan & Legal Description for the Sharp Hospital re/ “Purchase of property from Public Housing Administration;” a small collection of letters (Ap., May & June 1956) from E.F. Terrar, Jr. (Admin. Asst. to Wilson), Commissioner Charles E. Slusser (Housing and Home Finance Agency, FHA) & Frank R. McDougall (Asst. Sec. & Superintendent, Sharp Hospital Assn.) re/ “acquiring from the Public Housing Administration a 21-acre tract of land, which adjoins on the south the property on which our Hospital is located” for a possible price of $127,000; copies of a letter (7/20/56) from Leon W. Scales (Lindley, Lazar & Scales) & 3 Western Union telegrams (8/56) from Ed Terrar, Jr. & Leon Scales re/ filing of an “Application for Exemption (Form 1023)” for Sharp Hospital & expediting it with the Internal Revenue Service in order to qualify for a Ford Foundation grant of $51,000.
