Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memorandum, memos, government reports, bulletins & other materials. Examples are: One letter (3/24/58) from San Diego Mayor Charles C. Dail to Congressman Wilson & an attached copy of his letter (3/24/58) to Frank McDougall (Pres., Hospital Council of S.D. County) re/ “distribution of [federal] funds made available to the states under the Hill-Burton Act;” a collection of Western Union telegrams (3/58) from Congressman Wilson, Frank McDougall, Dr. T. Michael (Pres., Scripps Hospital) & the San Diego County Bd. of Supervisors re/ acute hospital bed shortage in San Diego & need for federal assistance, especially due to “impact of Medicare Program in this area;” 1 letter (3/21/58) from G. C. Crary (Administrator, Scripps Hospital) & his “attached letter . . . sent to Senator Kuckel in reply to a wire we received from him with reference to the hospital situation in San Diego County;” 1 Western Union telegram (3/19/58) from Congressman Wilson re/ “Medicare Program . . . Rees Stealy Clinic getting five thousand for equipment;” 1 Western Union telegram (12/17/58) from Cathy to Wilson & attached letter (12/18/58) from HEW re/ hospital grant for “Mercy Hospital Diagnostic and Treatment Center. Total amount $541,475—Federal Share $178,239;” a packet containing letters (Mar. 1959) from Congressman Wilson, Jonathan Kirby (newscaster, KCBQ Radio), Irving Alexander (Alexander Advertising Agency) & a copy of a booklet from the San Miguel Hospital Assn., Inc., A Proud Past re/ the Assn.’s fund drive for expansion of hospital facilities in El Cajon—La Mesa area, Wilson’s tape recorded assistance & other details; 1 letter (rec’d 4/24/59) from Milton F. Fillius, Jr. (Campaign Chairman, Tri-Hospital Building Fund) to Wilson, requesting his “endorsement and wholehearted enthusiasm to the Tri-Hospital Building Fund Campaign;” 1 letter (12/23/59) from the U.S. Surgeon General re/ HEW & State of CA approval of a “New 50-bed nursing home adjacent to existing general hospital” – “total estimated cost: $419,100 . . . Federal Share: $139,700;” 1 letter (2/19/60) from Congressman James B. Utt, 1 letter (1/27/60) from the Bd. of Directors, Scripps Hospital & Wilson’s reply (2/17/60) re/ H.R. 5901 and interest in “the exemption of non-profit hospitals from federal excise taxes;” 1 letter (2/9/60) from Frank R. McDougall (Administrator, Sharp Hospital) & Wilson’s reply (3/1/60) re/ House Ways and Means Committee, excise taxes & pending H.R. 5901; packet containing letters (May-July 1960) from George D. Brown (Trustee, The Mountain Empire Medical Center, Inc.), Congressman Wilson, Robert A. Forsythe (Acting Sec., HEW), copies of Mt. Empire Medical Center, A Doctor for Our Community (a 2 page brochure), & Sears-Roebuck Foundation, “Medical Economic Survey of Jacumba, California” (2 pp.) re/ the interest of the Mt. Empire Medical Center (Chartered by the State of CA as a non-profit) in obtaining funding by pledges & also from HEW; stapled packet containing corresp. (Oct. 1960-Jan. 1961) from Congressman Wilson, “Maggie,” constituent Mrs. Linda E. Broderick, E.M. Watson (Head, Branch One, Enlisted Services, Record Div., U.S. Navy) & A.E.
