Scope and Contents

A small collection of letters & news clippings. Examples are: One copy of a letter (3/22/54) from Congressman Wilson to constituent Charles A. Kaul re/ his “letters relative to the new gate at Jacumba to connect with the Mexicali-Tecate Highway;” a copy of a letter (3/22/54) from Congressman Wilson to Collector of Customs Frank A. Thornton, attached letters (3/15 & 3/17/54) from Dr. Charles A. Kaul, & 2 news clippings re/ Dr. Kaul’s concerns about the need for an “Jacumba gate,” promoting Jacumba Hot Springs & worries about illegal immigrants; 1 letter (4/7/54) from Collector of Customs Frank Thornton to Wilson & attached copy of Wilson’s letter (4/14/54) to Dr. Kaul re/ “opening a gate at Jacumba,” & Thornton’s listing of the reasons why “a presidential executive order” could not be issued for the Jacumba gate; 1 letter (4/18/54) from Dr. Kaul to Wilson in response to Wilson & Thornton’s communications re/ the doctor’s continued concerns about illegal immigration & the open border in that location; a small packet containing a copy of a letter (11/30/54) from Wilson to constituent Franklyn Holland (Pine Valley), Mr. Holland’s letter (11/23/54) to Wilson, & “A Petition For Opening A Port of Entry at Jacumba, California” (with approx. 90 signatures) re/ Wilson’s extensive negative commentary to Jacumba’s proposal; 1 letter (11/16/54) from constituent Phil D. Swing (Attorney at Law) & Wilson’s reply (11/30/54) re/ Mr. Swing’s interest in a new port of entry, support from Calexico residents & his interest in potential mining claims in Mexico; 1 letter (11/30/54) from CA State Senator Fred H. Kraft & Wilson’s reply (12/7/54) re/ Kraft’s support for a Jacumba gate, economic potential for Jacumba and other considerations, & Wilson’s notation that he originally supported the concept, but after thorough study “reached the conclusion that it was not feasible at this time;” 1 letter (1/11/54) from constituent Phil D. Swing (Attorney at Law) & Wilson’s Admin. Asst. E.F. Terrar, Jr.’s reply (1/14/55) re/ the Vader Report, an “adverse report” on opening a new port of entry at Jacumba; a letter (1/19/55) from constituent John E. Greer & Wilson’s reply (1/26/55) re/ Mr. Greer’s interest in mining in Mexico & the convenience of having a port of entry near Jacumba.
