A collection of letters, memos, telegrams, news clippings & promo photos. Examples are: A loose collection of news clippings from the January 1959 issues of The San Diego Union & the Evening Tribune re/ million dollar ship contract, “Keel Laying Rites,” “Maritime Administration,” “Milton Fillius, Jr., ‘58’ Young Man,”& other ship building items related to NASSCO; 2 copies of letters (1/28 & 1/30/59) from Congressman Wilson to Ben H. Guill (Vice Chairman, Federal Maritime Bd.) & to Milton F. Fillius, Jr. (V.P., NASSCO) re/ visiting the plant in S.D. & other courtesies received; a copy of a letter (2/12/59) from Congressman George P. Miller to G.E. Allen and to the men and women of National Steel who have made possible the launching of the Surveyor;” 1 Western Union telegram (5/22/59) from Wilson to Milton Fillius re/ “our sincere welcome and thanks to your honored guest Ben Guill; 1 copy of a letter (6/2/59) from Congressman Wilson to Mrs. Ben H. Guill re/ launching ceremony at NASSCO on April 25th; letters (7/27, 28 & 29/58) from Milton F. Fillius, Jr. to Secretary of Labor James P. Mitchell, John G. Grogan (Pres., Industrial Union of Marine & Ship Workers of America), & Congressman Wilson re/ “certain irresponsible union represent-atives in the Los Angeles area” & Fillius’ comment “that our Company has never made any deals with any Union and does not ever propose to do so; a small packet of corresp. (July-Aug. 1959) from Congressman Wilson, Edward F. Terrar (Office of the Secretary of Labor), James T. O‘Connell (Under Secretary of Labor) & Milton F. Fillius, Jr. re/ corresp. related to a Todd Rank and File Negotiating Committee "Open Letter” requesting “a wage survey under the Davis-Bacon and Walsh-Healey Act for the ship construction industry in the San Diego Area” & a newsy letter from Fillius to Wilson on difficult employee relations and the allegation of importing hundreds of Canadian workers; letters (9/1 & 9/10/59) from Milton F. Fillius, Jr.’s March 1950 certificate to practice as an attorney in all courts of the State of California, 1 copy of Last Week (a Rotarian publication) & 1 copy of a 4 page, January 1960, News Update from Congressman Wilson to his constituency re/ newsy data on politics, shipbuilding with photos of Wilson & others; 1 copy of San Diego Postal News (Vol. IX, No. 3, March 1960, 8 pp.)— includes brief item on the SS Export News, built by NASSCO; Memorandum (6/1/60) from Wilson’s office re/ bids on 2 DE’s, fishing boat subsidy & other info.; 1 copy of a letter (6/21/60) from Wilson to Milton Fillius, Jr. in support of Walter B. Kimble, a prospective employee for NASSCO; a small packet of corresp. (July-Aug. 1960) from Milton F. Fillius, Jr. & Harry E. O’Reilly (Executive Secretary-Treasurer, Maritime Trades Dept., AFL/CIO) re/ 5 ships for the United States Lines Company & letters to the Federal Maritime Board in support of NASSCO’s “request for the Application of Section 502F of the Merchant Marine Act in the awarding of the contract for these 5 ships;” 1 copy of a letter (7/20/60) from Congressman Wilson & John J. Allen, Jr.’s reply (n.d.) re/ “The Undersecretary of Commerce For Transportation” acknow-ledge’s Wilson’s letter, as well as NASSCO’s request for allocation of vessels to be constructed for U.S. Lines; 1 photocopy of “U.S. To Cut Pay Here By 2.7 million Decrease Slated Nation-wide Work Force,” (The San Diego Union, 7/23/60) & “Navy Predicts Loss of 546 Civilian Jobs $2,700,000 Drop Likely Here Under Ike’s Slash Order,” (Evening Tribune, 7/22/60); 1 letter (n.d.) from Milton F. Fillius, Jr. to Wilson re/ “allocation of a portion of the United States Lines’ ships to our company has been denied” & “You’re still the champ, Curly!;” a copy of a letter (8/4/60) from Thomas E. Stakem, Jr. (V.P., Federal Maritime Bd.) re/ Wilson’s support for an “allocation of all or part of the five C-4 vessels to be built for United States Lines Company . . . . The employment situation in the Southern California area is so critical;” 2 letters (11/7 & 11/9/60) from Milton F. Fillius, Jr. to Ralph E. Chairman, Ralph Wilson & attached copies of “Schedule A-- NASSCO—Schedule Layoff” & “Schedule B—Bid Submitted—1960” re/ “Thanks for your help,” congressman & problems of attempting to assimilate “former aircraft workers and naval personnel” into shipyard work & estimated reduction in various trades at NASSCO = 700 for 10/61 to 3/62; 1 copy of a memo 911/16/60) from Marge O’Donnell to Milton Fillius re/ her support for a rehire; 1 letter (12/3/60) from Walter T. Phair (Asst. to the V.P. Kaiser Industries, Corp.) to Congressman Wilson re/ “We are certainly appreciative of the assistance you have continued to extend in behalf of West Coast shipping.” NASSCO was unsuccessful “in the award of the four American Export Lines C-3 cargo vessels;” 1 letter (12/5/60) from Milton F. Fillius, Jr. & Wilson’s reply (12/28/60) re/ NASSCO “low bidder on the two States Lines ships . . . . We are in good shape through 1961” & Wilson’s comment “You were very kind, as usual, to give me thanks for helping” & reference to Marge’s (11/16/60) rehire request.
