Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memorandums, telegrams, news releases and other printed material. Examples are: 1 copy of a letter (2/27/59) from Congressman Wilson to the Secretary of the Navy & Capt. P. B. Haines Jr.’s reply (3/6/59), (Dir., Congressional Inquiry Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy) & attached copy of a news clipping -- “Navy Approval Sought To Move Sanitary Fill,” The San Diego Union, 2/27/59; a large collection of constituent letters & postal cards (3/59) & Wilson’s replies (3/59) re/ “No Dump In Clairmont. Please Protect Us From Such a Fate.” In response, Wilson “requested the Secretary of the Interior . . . that the fill be located on property presently owned or controlled by the Navy . . . . We are optimistic that favorable action will result and the proposed fill will be placed at some place other than the Clairmont area;” 1 copy of a letter (2/27/59) from Congressman Wilson & the Secretary of the Navy, Thomas S. Oates’ reply (3/17/59) re/ the Navy’s projected cooperation in locating “a refuse disposal site on Navy land adjacent to the Naval Air Station, Miramar, California;” a small packet of letters (Feb. 1959) from Ross G. Tharp (Vice-Mayor, San Diego), Congressman Wilson, constituent Mrs. Mattie C. Ross, George E. Bean (City Mgr., San Diego), Capt. N.A. Campbell (Commanding Officer, U.S. Naval Air Station, Miramar), Irwin J. Naus (Pres., Clairmont Town Council), & attached news clippings—“Scenery Defended Clairmont Meet Lashes At Dump,” “Clairmont Wives Battle Dump Site,” & “Editor—Thanks a lot for the editorial of Jan. 15, 1959 . . . Mrs. James Adams” re/ extensive corresp. indicat-ing opposition to using San Clemente Canyon for a sanitary fill site & the potential alternative of using “land recently acquired by the Navy to prevent residential construction under the field carrier landing pattern;” 1 copy of a “Memorandum for City Manager, City of San Diego,” from RAdm. C.C. Hartman (Commandant, Eleventh Naval Distict) & 2 letters (5/20 & 6/17/59) from S.D. City Mgr. George E. Bean re/ the leasing & annual fees for “land adjacent to the Miramar Naval Air Station;” 1 Western Union telegram from Congessman Wilson to City Mgr. Bean re/ “BuDocks considering a possible permit rather than leasing for Miramar fill;” 1 letter (7/22/59) from RAdm. C.C. Hartman (Commandant, Eleventh Naval District) & Wilson’s reply (7/25/59) re/ potential agreement with City of San Diego for a $500 a year lease or permit with a potential “order to complete the canyon fill-in in the fifteen-year period;” 1 letter (8/31/59) from Robert L. Rueckert (Sec., Clairmont Town Council) & Wilson’s reply (9/15/59) re/ the Council’s “most heartfelt thanks and appreciation for . . . [Wilson’s] help and cooperation in the solution of the Sanitation Refuse Problem . . . .”
