Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memos, memorandums, reports, & news clippings. Examples are: a collection of letters (Jan.-Feb. 1961) from Denny Wright & John Pruett (Owners, Star Route Egg Farm, Potero, CA.), CA. Assemblyman Jack Schrade, & Congressman Wilson re/ opposition to the opening of the Tecate Port of Entry 24 hours a day – “Highway 94 is a dangerous highway and should not carry more traffic after dark;” a collection of letters (Dec. 1960-Feb. 1961) from W.R. Morehead (CA.-Mexico Good Neighbor Conference), Congressman Wilson, D.B. Strubinger (Acting Commissioner of Customs, Treasury Dept.), Wilson office note, & mimeograph copies (2 pp.) of “Purpose and Objectives of the Comite De Mexico - California” re/ continued efforts to encourage Congressman Wilson to support the attempts by the Good Neighbor Conference to keep the Tecate Gate open on a 24-hour basis; a collection of letters (June-July 1961) from constituent Mrs. John E. Peverly, Congressman Wilson, & J.M. Swing (Commissioner, INS) re/ continued discussions on opening the Tecate Gate for longer hours, hardships for those wishing to stay beyond the 6 p.m. closing time, & the Regional Commissioner’s conclusion that additional hrs. were not justified at this time; a collection of letters (July 1961) from George E. Taylor (Pres. Tecate Chamber of Commerce), Congressman Wilson, & D.B. Strubinger (Acting Commissioner of Customs, Treasury Dept.) re/ continued efforts to establish “longer hours at the Tecate Gate,” the Bureau of Customs’ continued inspection and investigation of the issue, & political commentary by Mr. Taylor; 1 letter (8/21/61) from constituent Raymond E. Broerman & Wilson’s reply (9/13/61) re/ complaints that “the port of entry at Tecate is only open from eight a.m. until six p.m. and this has been a thorn in my side several times as I have many good friends in this town of Mexico;” a collection of letters (Aug.-Sept. 1961) from George E. Taylor, Congressman Wilson, Commissioner Philip Nichols, Jr. (Bureau of Customs, Treasury Dept.), & 1 copy of el mexicano Gran Diario Regional (Aug. 19, 1961) re/ “Our inspection team returned from the San Diego district only this week and is now preparing a report on the Tecate situation,” a brief article in the newspaper, & Mr. Taylor’s extensive commentary on the inspection & its results; 1 letter (10/8/61) from George Taylor & Wilson’s reply (10/18/61) re/ thanks to Wilson for all his assistance, his approval of keeping the gate open for a longer period, & a special Tecate meeting which Wilson could not attend—“I’ll be in Washington State campaigning;” a collection of letters (Oct.-Nov. 1961) from D.B. Strubinger (Acting Commissioner of Customs, Treasury Dept.), J.W. Swing (Commissioner, INS), & George Taylor re/ Customs & INS agreed to authorizing 16-hour service at the Tecate Gate, effective 12/1/61, Mr. Taylor’s comment -- “Many thanks, [Bob] . . . you did a good job and it is appreciated by all,” as well as other personal commentary.
