A small collection of letters. Examples are: Five letters (Nov. 1956-Jan. 1957) from Don K. Ratty (Pres., Associated Glider Clubs of So. Calif., Ltd.), Jim Spurgeon (Seca Modern Fiberglass Laminations), Congressman Wilson, & O.W. Campbell (S.D. City Mgr.) re/ Golf over Gliders – “a squeeze play that is being pressed upon us here at the Torrey Pines Glider-Port. This site must be saved at all costs” & Wilson’s appeals to Mayor Dail, & to the City Council, to preserve the Gliderport; 1 copy of a letter (7/24/58) from D.K. Ratty (Pres., Assoc. Glider Clubs) to Frank Pace, Jr. (Pres., CONVAIR) re/ an appeal to General Dynamics to go beyond their million dollar support of the new university to also help preserve a gliderport at Torrey Pines; 5 letters (July-Aug. 1958) from D.K. Ratty (Pres., Assoc. Glider Clubs), Congressman Wilson, & Les Halcomb (Asst. City Mgr., S.D.) re/ thanks to Wilson for his help, but the Gliderport “still seems a distant dream and is no nearer a reality than a year ago,” problems with the university site taking too much property, & est. costs of retaining the Gliderport for the City of $350,000 to $400,00. Wilson still carried, “in my wallet[,] a glider student’s pilot permit issued to me in 1931 by the Department of Commerce.”
