Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memos, telegrams, printed articles, newsclippings, & government reports. Examples are: One copy of a letter (4/8/58) from Catherine Parham (Secretary, Wilson’s Washington Office) to Mrs. Dolores Nelson (Am. Tunaboat Assn.) re/ need more “reprints of the tuna speech which BOSS made on the floor of the House of Representatives;” 1 letter (n.d.) from Lon Vallery (Ransdell Incorporated- Publisher, Printers) to Miss Parham & attached copies of The Maritime Register, Vol. 2, No. 4, April 1958 re/ Tuna Import Act & an article in the periodical “‘Save Tuna Fleet’ Drive Launched Unionists Seek Restrictions on Imports As Domestic Tuna Industry Loses Ground,” pp. 4-5; “Memo For Tuna File From --- Mr. Parma” (4/24/58) re/ meeting in Washington of Congressmen Wilson, Utt, Tollefson and King with tuna representatives to work out strategy on H.R. 9244; 2 letters (4/7 & 4/28/58) from Henry Kearns (Asst. Secretary of Commerce for International Affairs) & Wilson’s response (4/28/58) re/ a foreign trade impact study for Los Angeles County and Kearns’ active support for the renewal of the Reciprocal Trade Agreements Act; 1 letter (4/4/58) from Ruel Liggett (Attorney at Law) & Wilson’s reply (5/31/58) re/ Wilson’s speech on March 13 & Mr. Leggett’s critique of labor unions as to tuna clipper maintenance & repair at sea; a 6 page letter (1958) from Wilbur M. Chapman (Dir. of Research, Am. Tuna-boat Assn.) to Wilson extolling the congressman’s support & listing all the actions taken to date; 1 copy of United States Tariff Commission, Tuna Fish—Report on Investigation Conducted Pursuant to a Resolution by the Committee on Finance of the United States Senate dated August, 20, 1957—“For release May 1, 1958” (95 pages plus Statistical Appendix); 2 newsclippings—“Tuna Firms’ Woes Go To White House—San Diego-San Pedro Team Presents Problems To Eisenhower Adviser” & Editorial—“Remedying A Neglect—City Must Fill Navy Need,” (The San Diego Union, 6/16/58) – both articles praise Wilson’s efforts on these issues; 1 letter (7/24/58) from W.M. Arnholdt Smith (U.S. National Bank) re/ frozen tuna imports, Tuna Import Act of 1958, loans for fishing boats, & other personal information; 1 letter (12/15/58) from Mr. & Mrs. Italo Vattrione, attached copy of the Am. Tunaboat Assn.’s Newsletter (Issue 58-18, Nov. 28, 1958) & Wilson’s reply to Mrs. & Mrs. Vattrione (1/6/58) re/ “The Japanese have ruined many families. They are knocking the U.S. Tuna fleet broke;” 1 letter (6/10/59) from Jonathan Kirby (News Dir. KCBQ) & attached copies of “Taped statement of Joaquim Canas” (Pres., Am. Tunaboat Assn.) & taped message—“This is Jonathan Kirby!” re/ Mr. Canas’ critical message that “The San Diego Tuna Industry is just about dead!”
