Scope and Contents
A small collection of letters & memos from constituents, draftees, the Selective Service System, Congressman Wilson & his staff regarding issues related to draft boards, the System, & individual problems. Examples are: Letters (3/18 & 7/31/57) from Miss Martha Prouty & Rudolph L. Glasel, & Congressman Wilson’s replies (3/27 & 8/12/57) re/ concerns over the 3 million dollars being spent on advertizing for the Armed Forces when draft boards already cost so much & drafting “only boys and men with higher I.Q. ratings;” 1 letter (1/8/59) from General Lewis B. Hershey (Dir., Selective Service System) to Congressman Wilson re/ a notice that all members of Congress will be kept informed of the operation of the Agency under the Universal Military Training and Service Act, as amended; a small packet of corresp. (Oct. 1958 – Mar. 1959) from Leon W. Parma (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.), constituent Danny Ray Yelvington, Major G. Capha (Office of Legislative Liaison), & “Memo from Cathy” re/ Mr. Yelvington’s attempts to resolve the dilemma between being drafted while awaiting an opportunity to go into the Navy’s O.C.S. program; 1 letter (9/21/59) from Erling B. Holtsmark & Leon W. Parma’s reply (9/25/59) re/ Mr. Holtsmark’s problem of being “awarded a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship for graduate study at Harvard University” and being informed this summer “that I was to report for induction into the Army.”
