Scope and Contents
Two government documents and a collection of sixteen packets of corresp. pertaining to Wilson’s constituents. Examples are: National HQ., Selective Service System, Transmittal Memorandum No. 104 (Dec. 29, 1961, 8 pp.) & Transmittal Memorandum No. 109 (June 15, 1962, 3 pp.); a small packet of corresp. (Sept. 1961-Jan. 1962) from Francis Edward Parzych, Congressman Wilson, & Lewis B. Hershey (Dir., Selective Service System) re/ complications as to deferred induction into the Armed Services; a small collection of letters (Dec. 1961-Jan. 1962) from Ping-Chwang Shen, Congress-man Wilson, & Col. Walter H. Henderson (Chief, Manpower Div. ,CA. HQ. Selective Service System) re/ “the possible induction of John Tuck-ming Shen” & his reclassifi-cation “out of class I-A and will not be subject to further processing for service;” 4 letters (Jan.-Feb. 1962) from constituent D.E. McElhaney & responses from Congress-man Wilson & Lewis B. Hershey re/ Mr. McElhany’s commentaries on placing 4-F individuals “into government service similar to the Peace Corps,” the concept had been taken from William J. Lederer’s book, A Nation of Sheep. McElhany also comments on RN wages in San Diego being less than other cities in California; a small collection of letters (Jan.-Feb. 1962) from constituent Kenneth Stone, Congress-man Wilson & Lewis B. Hershey re/ Mr. Stone’s unsuccessful attempt to obtain Director Hershey’s intervention on his 1-A classification. letters from constituent Lynn E. Wilson & responses from Congressman Wilson & Lewis B. Hershey re/ a San Diego State College graduate student’s attempt to postpone induction so he could begin medical school; letters (Feb.-Mar. 1962) from constituent James H. Franks & responses from Congress-man Wilson & Lewis B. Hershey re/ Mr. Franks’ support for the S.D.S.C. student noted above, as well has his attempt to obtain a college deferment for his son, Samuel, who also attended S.D.S.C.; a dozen letters (Mar.- June, 1962) from constituent Mrs. Anita Schenck, Congressman Wilson, Major General J.C. Lambert (The Adjutant General, U.S. Army), Lewis B. Hershey, Major General Julian A. Wilson (Acting The Adjutant General, U.S. Army), & constituent James H. Schenck re/ San Jose College graduate student James Schenck’s success in being finally reclassified 1-Y from 1-A; a small packet of letters (Jan.-May 1962) from constituent Gerald L. Nutter (a Y.M.C.A. youth counselor), Congressman Wilson, Major Thomas L. Jensen, U.S.M.C. (Manpower Div., CA. HQ., Selective Service System) re/ Mr. Nutter’s success in getting his 1-A classification changed to “‘1-A group 2’ by reason of my wife’s pregnancy, but his disappointment in not succeeding in getting the President & the various Selective Service administrators to avoid “the trap of tapping off our skilled professionals which have the task of guidance of youth;” 2 Wilson office notes & 2 letters (6/8 & 6/22/62) from Congressman Wilson & Morrie R. Pion re/ an unsuccessful attempt to assist Daniel Glen Tichonchuk as to his draft status; 1 letter (7/11/62) from constituent Mrs. Martha W. Melhorn, Wilson’s replies (7/20 & 7/26/62), & an attached letter (7/25/62) from Director Lewis B. Hershey re/ Mrs. Mel-horn’s extensive suggestions as to drafting those younger men, recently out of high school, who are not succeeding in college; a large packet of letters (June-Aug. 1962) from constituent Richard K. Floberg, Jr., Congressman Wilson, Dr. J.W. Lowder (Parkway Medical Group), Dolores Collier (Coordinator, Local Bd. #138, Selective Service System), Director Lewis B. Hershey & form 88—“Report of Medical Examination” for “Floberg, Richard Keating, Jr. (15 Feb, 61)” re/ the long record of Mr. Floberg, Jr.’s final success in proving that his medical exam records demonstrated that he was “not qualified for military service under current standards;” copies of letters (Sept. 1962) from Congress Wilson, S.R. Ellis (Branch Mgr., Under-wood Corp.), Patricia Smith (Clerk, Local Bd., #138, Selective Service System), & Major Malcolm F. Miller (Dist. Coordinator, Southern Area HQ., CA. Selective Service System) re/ the unsuccessful “draft deferment request of Eduardo Sergio BARTOLINI-Magozzi” – “His leaving this company at this time would work a serious hardship;” 1 letter (rec’d 10/8/62) from Clairmont High School student Russel Hudson, Wilson’s reply (10/16/62), & an attached copy of a letter (10/15/62) from Director Lewis B. Hershey re/ Mr. Hudson’s queries about induction into the armed services—General Hershey indicated the ages for induction were 18 ½ to 26 – “the oldest registrants are ordered first . . . [however] the current ages are usually in the 22 to 24 year old age bracket;” a small packet of letters & 1 telegram (July-Nov. 1962) from Mrs. John M. Luna, Congressman Wilson, & Director Lewis B. Hershey re/ the complications in obtaining a travel permit for Mrs. Luna’s son so he could travel to Europe for graduate study; 1 Western Union telegram (12/5/62) from Congressman Wilson & a telegram response (12/12/62) from K.H. Leitch (State Dir., Selective Service System) – postponing David Michael Anderson’s “induction call to allow him to complete courses of study in which he is presently enrolled.”
