Scope and Contents
A collection of 12 packets of letters relating to Wilson’s constituents & Selective Service classifications & inductions. Examples are: Several letters (Dec. 1962-Jan. 1963) from Congressman Wilson, Mrs. Evelyn Kelly, & Selective Service Dir. Lewis B. Hershey re/ the unsuccessful attempt to delay, because of family hardship, the induction into the U.S. Army in Dec. 1962 of Mr. Arthur Lee Sepin; 1 letter (2/8/62) from constituent Colin Fort, responses from Congressman Wilson & Dir. Hershey, & attached copy of Cedric W. Tars, Jr. (Analyist in National Defense, Foreign Affairs Div., The Library of Congress), Reasons For Continuing The Draft, Feb. 20, 1963 – 3 pp. re/ Mr. Fort’s frustration in not being able, locally, to find more information on the rationales for continuing the Selective Service System; 1 letter (3/7/63) from constituent Thomas Henry Blackmun, attached letter (11/9/61) from Mrs. Dorothy E. Meeks (Clerk, Local Bd. No. 140, San Diego), 2 letters (3/8 & 3/11/63) from Congressman Wilson, & 1 letter (3/12/63) from Major Malcolm F. Miller, USAF (Dist. Coordinator, Selective Service HQ., Southern Area) re/ Mr. Blackmun’s problems in attempting to enlist in the Navy inspite of his 1-Y classification; 1 letter (3/10/63) from constituent A. Robinson, an enclosed pamphlet, End the Draft in ’63 & Congressman Wilson’s reply (3/18/63) – Mr. Robinson’s queries were responsed to by Congressman Wilson. He noted that the House passed the draft law renewal in early March “with only three dissenting votes;” 1 Western Union telegram (rec’d 3/21/63) from Bob Burdick (San Diego Chargers) & 2 pages of Wilson office notes (n.d.) responding to the contents of Burdick’s telegram --- “Heres our latest catastrophe. His name is John Hadl, a quarterback. His plight is near induction into the Armed Forces;” a packet of corresp. (Feb.-May 1963) from constituent David L. Kelley, Congressman Wilson, Capt. M.A. Whalen (Congressional Liaison Officer, U.S. Coast Guard), & Dir. Hershey re/ Wilson’s “help and intercession in my recent problem with the Coast Guard, and for your help and information regarding my classification with the Selective Service System;” a packet of letters (Nov. 1962-June 1963) from George W. Bergstrom, Jr., Congressman Wilson, Col. Carl V. Schott (Congressional Inquery Div., Office of Legislative Liaison, Dept. of the Air Force), & Col. D.C. Turner (Dir. of Reserve Components Personnel, Dept. of the Army) re/ the complicated process for politically conservative Bergstrom’s being able to enter officer training for the Air Force & not be inducted into the U.S. Army; a collection of letters (July-Sept. 1963) from Dr. Gerald K. Sharkey (Professor of Marketing, S.D.S.C.), Dr. M.M. Lemme (Dean of Graduate Div., S.D.S.C.), Congress-man Wilson & Dir. Lewis B. Hershey re/ the successful postponement of graduate student Jerry A. Hand (M.A. in Marketing) of his induction until Nov. 1963; 1 letter (9/13/63) from constituent Mrs. Ruth Boyce, responses from Congressman Wilson, & Dir. Lewis B. Hershey re/ Mrs. Boyce’s concern over her recently married son being drafted when there were enough single men available; a packet of letters (June-Oct. 1963) from Major William E. Bullington, USAF (Chief, Student Selection Div., Lackland Air Force Base, Texas), constituent Wayne R. Johnson, Congressman Wilson, Wilson’s secretary “Marge,” Dir. Lewis B. Hershey, & Dr. M.M. Lemme (Dean of Graduate Div., S.D.S.C) re/ “Mr. Johnson , a potential Air Force Officer Training School candidate, was successful in getting his draft notice postponed. “Without [Wilson’s] . . . fast and effective action I would have been inducted into the Armed Forces by now.” Although now free to report to OTS, Lackland, Mr. Johonson indicated that “due to the recent executive order exempting married men from the draft, I may remain a civilian;” a copy of a letter (7/29/63) from M.M. Lemme (Dean of Graduate Div., S.D.S.C.) to F. D. Johnson (Local Bd., No. 134, Orange County) re/ “Jerry A. Hand . . . a candidate for the Master of Science degree in Business Administration . . . will need approximently three months for the completion of his thesis . . . .” Dean Lemme suggested an extension of Hand’s induction; a packet of corresp. (July-Oct. 1963) from Director Lewis B. Hershey, constituent Mrs. Lottie Presley, & Congressman Wilson re/ extensive commentary by this mother of a drafted son on “the inequities in our present draft system and the outline of . . . [her] son’s difficulties with the local draft board;” a collection of letters (8/23, 10/23, & 11/8/63) from Congressman Wilson, Lt. General Leonard D. Heaton (The Surgeon General), & several Wilson office notes (n.d.) re/ Wilson’s requested delay of the induction of a close friend who was found “fit for the draft,” even though he had “osteochrondrosis of the left knee;” a collection of letters (12/4, 12/6, & 12/12/63) from Dick Kent (Publicity, Massachusetts Republican Assembly State Committee), W.B. Sprague, Jr. (Dir. of Public Relations, Republican National Committee), Congressman Wilson, & a news clipping—“Gallup Finds—Start of Draft Sooner, Public Tells Military,” The Boston Globe, Dec. 4, 1963, p. 21 re/ complaints about the draft age & Republican Party interest in tapping this—Mr. Kent indicated that his “feeling is that young people are tending Republican.”
