Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memos, office notes, personnel records, a reprint of the Congressional Record, & other materials. Examples are: a small collection of letters (Sept. 1963-Jan. 1964) from constituent John Erickson, Congressman Wilson, Lewis B. Hershey (Dir. Selective Service System), & Jim G. Akin (Congressional Liaison Officer, H.E.W.) re./ S.D.S.C. graduate Erickson’s problem as a Jehovah’s Witness with the inflexibility of the Selective Service System; five letters (Dec. 1963-Jan. 1964) from Gary Washburn (Fresno State College student), Congressman Wilson, & Director Hershey re/ Mr. Washburn’s success, with Wilson’s help, in being classified Class II-S (student deferment); 1 letter (3/9/64) from El Cajon constituent Arthur F. Thompson, & Wilson’s reply (3/13/64) re/ Mr, Thompson’s political conservative critique of President Johnson’s “War on Poverty” & other “liberal government” programs; 1 copy of a letter (4/8/64) from Congressman Wilson to constituent Mrs. A. Bolger with the word “rewrite” in script at the top of the page re/ “your letter concerning the draft law and the Supreme Court’s Decision on praying in public places;” a small packet containing a letter (3/11/64) from Mrs. Charles Hinman (Escondido, CA), an enclosed copy of Jack Anderson, “Are We Becoming a nation of draft dodgers?,” Parade, Jan. 19, 1964, pp. 6&7, & Wilson’s repy (4/14/64) re/ Mrs. Hinman’s critique of the draft & the problems her married son continued to have with the system even after he completed 2 years of active service in the Army; 1 letter ((4/18/64) from constituent Richard T. Bauman & Wilson’s reply (4/23/64) re/ crisis in receiving induction notice by a service station owner & his attempts to dispose of his business prior to military service; a packet of corresp. (Mar.-May 1964) from constituent James A. Bartley, Dir. Lewis B. Hershey, Congressman Wilson, & enclosed photostats re/ Mr. Bartley’s efforts to help his son, S.D.S.C. graduate student James Bartley, postpone his induction so as to complete his M.A. work, & also possibly enter the U.S. Navy as a Lt. Jg.; 1 copy of a letter (5/22/64) from Congressman Thomas B. Curtis to “Dear Republican Newsletter Reader” & an attached copy of a reprint of his “Review of Military Manpower Procurement System Based on the Draft,” Congressional Record for Tuesday, April 21, 1964, 15 pp.; 2 copies of Congressman Wilson’s speech, “Requirement For a Good Military Manpower System,” April 21, 1964, 4 pp.; 1 letter (9/14/64) from Maggie Young (Wilson’s Secretary, S.D. Office) to Russ Blanford (Chief Counsel, House Armed Forces Committee), Mr. Blandford’s scrip response on the above letter, &1 letter (9/28/64) from Maggie Young to El Cajon constituent Jack Demers re/ Mr. Demers’ query about “a move to exclude 22 year olds and up from the draft . . . . there are no plans in this Congress for such a change in the draft laws;” 4 letters (Sept.-Oct. 1964) from constituent, & S.D. City College student Koichi Santohigashi, & Congressman Wilson re/ Mr. Santohigashi’s concern about his draft status & the potential conflict with an opportunity to serve as a photograph aboard a ship for two years; a packet of corresp. (July-Oct. 1964) from constituent Timothy M. Bailey, Major Malcolm F. Miller, USAF (Dist. Coord., Selective Service System, Los Angeles), Dir. Lewis B. Hershey, Col. Michael C. Varhol, USA (Chief, Personal Actions Div., EPD) & Brig. General Melivin Zais, (Deputy Dir. of Enlisted Personnel, U.S, Army) re/ Mr. Bailey’s difficulties in coping with the draft, physical problems, educational plans, & unemployment; 1 letter (10/12/64) from Chula Vista constituent Charles D. Nutley, Wilson’s replies (10/13 & 10/22/64), & enclosed copy of a letter (10/22/64) from Col. K.H. Leitch (State Dir., Selective Service System) re/ Mr. Nutley’s difficulties with potential induction at the expense of his attempts to complete an internship as a pharmacist; several letters (Oct.-Nov. 1964) from S.D. City College student Patrick C. Kennedy, Congressman Wilson, Col. K.H. Leitch (State Dir., Selective Service System) & Dir. Lewis B. Hershey re/ the complicated process of Mr. Kennedy’s attempt to postpone induction, rectify his error in not notifying his draft board of a change of address, & his eventual success in being classifed II-S (student deferment); 1 letter (10/27/64) from college student Daniel Zamudia, replies (11/2 & 11/12/64 from Catherine Parham (Wilson’s Secretary) & Congressman Wilson, & an attached letter (11/10/64) from Norman S. Paul (Asst. Secretary of Defense) re/ an 18 year-old’s queries concerning his military “‘draft option’” as to educational deferment.
