Examples are: A letter (12/16/64) from constituent Herbert & Margaret Comstock, Congressman Wilson’s reply (1/8/65), & an attached copy of a letter (1/5/65) from Selective Service System Director Lewis B. Hershey re/ the Comstock’s son’s current II-S classification & plans to work on a Master’s Degree in Microbiology at S.D.S.C.; several letters (Jan. 1965) from Gary Lee Washburn, Congressman Wilson, & Dir. Hershey re/ Mr. Washburn, who had received a II-S classification in 1964—thanks to Wilson’s assistance, is again reassured by Dir. Hershey that his student deferment would continue until Oct. 1965; a packet of corresp. (June 1964-Jan. 1965) from Congressman Wilson, John B. Smyth (Smyth Research Assocates), Patricia Doane (Clerk, Local Bd. #141, Selective Service System), & Dir. Lewis B. Hershey re/ CA Maritime Academy graduate Alan Bish’s attempt to obtain a commission in the Naval Reserve to forstall being drafted; a collection of letters (Oct.-Nov. 1965) from Congressman Wilson, Dir. Lewis B. Hershey, Lakeside constituent, Mrs. Belle Melville, & Lt. General Leonard D. Heaton (The Surgeon General, Dept. of the Army) re/ a mother’s concern over the “the medical qualification of Mr. Donald Melville” & his induction into the U.S. Marine Corps in early November 1965; a small packet of letters (Oct.-Dec. 1965) from CA Assemblyman Richard J. Donovan, Mike James McCordets (Army Information Co.)—“Dear Future Draftee”—an order form for a 100 page book, Armed Forces and Draft Information, Congressman Wilson, Dir. Lewis B. Hershey, Edgar M. Gillenwaters (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.), & Fred M. Vinson, Jr. (Asst. Attorney General, Dept. of Justice) re/ the false alarm raised by Chula Vista resident H.E. Barsch & his Assemblyman as to the adverstisment “Dear Future Draftee,” which seemed to encourage methods of avoiding the draft. Dir. Hershey noted that “All of the information which is stated to be included in the book has been published by the government . . . [and is] available to the public;” several letters (Nov.-Dec. 1965) from Congressman Wilson, San Diego constituent Dale Eric Johnson, Dir. Lewis B. Hershey, & Edgar Gillenwaters (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.) re/ Mr. Johnson, a recent S.D.S.C graduate & a beginning 5th grade elementary school teacher in southeast San Diego, was reclassified as I-A & is unable to prevent a pre-induction physical examination; letters (Oct.-Dec. 1965) from San Diego constituent Mrs. W.R. Gordon, Congressman Wilson, Dir. Lewis B. Hershey, & Edgar M. Gillenwaters re/ Mrs.Gordon’s concerns about her son’s draft classification becoming I-A, since he was now a student at U.C.S.D.; letters (Oct.-Dec. 1965) from San Diego constituents Mr. & Mrs. Andrew Anderson, Congressman Wilson, & Dir. Lewis B. Hershey re/ the Andersons’ concern that their son, Paul, a S.D.S.C. graduate & under a 2 year contract to teach at Busoga College in Uganda, is being denied draft deferment by his local draft board – Dir. Hershey appealed the classification to the Presidnet; a small collection of letters (Oct.-Dec. 1965) from San Diego constituent Robert E. Barker (YNC, USN, U.S. Naval Statio, FPO, NY), Congressman Wilson, & Dir. Lewis B. Hershey re/ Mr. Barker’s son Bruce’s difficulties in getting a II-S reclassification form Local Bd. 141 are successfully achieved through the efforts of Congressman Wilson; a small collection of letters (Nov.-Dec. 1965) from Congressman Wilson, San Diego constituent James Russell Johnson, Dir. Lewis B. Hershey, & Major Thomas L. Jensen (Chief, Manpower Section, CA HQ., Selective Service System) re/ Mr. Johnson, “a teacher of educable mentally retarded children at Kennedy Elementary School,” has received a December 7th draft call & is concerned about “the government policies and practices regarding the drafting of men for the war in Viet Nam are consistent with the present emphasis that is being placed on the war against poverty and assistance to under-priviledged children” – Since Mr. Johnson’s draft board in El Centro postponed his induction until Febrary 1966, the CA HQ. took no action on this appeal.
