Scope and Contents

A large collection of letters, telegrams, & notes from constituents of Wilson, including his & U.S. military responses. Examples are: A 3 page letter (10/7/63) from Col. Oscar B. Steely (Selfridge AFB, Michigan) & Wilson’s reply (4/3/64) re/ a “comprehensive and well presented letter in which you expressed your personal thoughts concerning the retention of well-qualified officers and airmen;” phone call notes (n.d.) & Wilson letter in reply (4/9/64) to La Mesa constituent Mrs. Arlene Carroll re/ her inquiry about ROTC programs at UC Berkeley; a small packet containing 14 pages of names, addresses & phone #s for “California County Service Officers, State Hospital Trust Officers – Other Service Points – Department of Veterans Affairs – Veterans Service Organizations;” a copy of a letter (4/5/64) from Congressman Wilson to La Mesa constituent Mrs. Hazel Bettenhauser re/ “your husband’s pension” & the Veterans Administration; 1 letter (5/2/64) from former La Jolla resident Mrs. A.W. Stewart (now a resident of Hong Kong) & Wilson’s reply (5/19/64) re/ an inquiry about the Air Force status of her son, Rossiter L. Mikel, III. Wilson’s policy concerning inquiries about military personnel required “that we must hear directly from the serviceman;” a small packet of letters (Ap.-June 1964) from George M. Cundiff (Senior Chief Ship-fitter, USS Piedmont, AD-17), Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), Lt. D.F. Parker (Special Inquiries, Enlisted Personnel Div., BuPers), & Commander R.E. Curtis (Head, Discharge Section, BuPers) re/ George Cundiff”s inquiries concerning a transfer to the Fleet Reserve because of family issues – he was successful; a small packet containing letters & telegrams (Ap.-June 1964) from San Diego constit-uent Mrs. Darlene Hyde, Major General J.C. Lambert (The Adjutant General, HQ. Dept, of the Army), Congressman Wilson, Lt. Col. Thomas W. Keitt (HQ., Adjutant General, 8th Army Support Command), “CG EASCOM SEOUL KOREA,” & Brig. General H.G. Davisson (Commanding, 8th U.S. Army Support Command) re/ inquiries from Mrs. Hyde as to child support, her former husband’s remarriage, & complications there from; 1 letter (6/3/64) from H.M. Webster (Mgr. L.A. Regional Office, Veterans Admin.) & Wilson’s replies (6/11/64) re/ an award ceremony as “Outstanding Regional Office for 1963” for the L.A. Region; a small packet of letters (July-Nov. 1964) from HM3rd Richard A. Dragon (3rd Engineer Bn., 3rd Marine Div., Okinawa), Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Navy), Lt. D.F. Parker (Special Inquiries, Enlisted Personnel Div., BuPers), & Capt. J.E. Tuttle (Commanding Officer, 3rd Engineer Bn.) re/ the hardship circumstances for this married enlisted man in terms of a 13 month tour of duty on Okinawa; 4 letters (July-Aug. 1964) Mrs. Joanne Hare, Dr. Eugene W. Runsey, Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s Washington office secretary), & Congressman Wilson re/ a son’s application for a compassionate reassignment as to his summer Army reserve training; 1 letter (7/7/64) from Gregg Anderson (Trousdale Const. Co.) & Margaret Young’s replies (7/9 & 7/13/64) re/ developing “a special area for veterans at our San Diego cemetary, El Camino Memorial Park,” a request for a mailing list of San Diego veterans, & a response from Ms Young that indicated that the V.A. did not have such a list. If they did, federal law prohibited it from being made available to any individual; a small collection of telephone reminders, letters, & office memorandums (7/64) from Santee constituent SSgt. Thomas W. Crudington, Wilson secretaries – Arlene & Catherine Parham, & Mrs. G. Crew re/ the SSgt.’s successful conditional release from the CA National Guard; 1 letter (7/7/64) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Chester J. Raney & Wilson’s secretary Catherine Parham’s reply, (7/17/64) re/ “an injustice that is being done in this area”—the Navy’s transfer to overseas duty “to an island in the Pacific” of a highly qualified Endocrinologist and Nuclear medicine Doctor; 1 “Memorandum For File” (7/22/64) from Wilson’s Washington Office re/ a phone call from CS1 James Kenneth Funk (Galley 2-Arlington Barracks, VA.) & his need for an extension of his shore duty because of a family crisis; 4 letters (June-July 1964) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Violet J. Tooley, Congressman Wilson, & Bernard J. Zincke (Counsel, House Merchant Marine & Fisheries Committee) re/ a critical 4 page letter from the wife of a Coast Guard Commander (& aviator with 20 years of service) who was recently “selected out” of aviation & the pattern of alleged discrimination evident against the Coast Guard Service; 4 letters (7/64) from Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s Secretary), San Diego constituent J.W. Humphries, Col. John W. Hanger (QMC., Chief Support Services, U.S. Army), & Congressman Wilson re/ the unfortunate problems & lack of success Mr. Humphries had in his attempt to have his deceased wife (who served as a WAAC from Nov. 1942 to Aug. 1943) to be buried in Fort Rosecrans National Cemetary; a packet of letters (June-July 1964) from San Diego constituent Mrs. John D. Ludwig, Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison, Office of the Secretary of the Navy), LCDR M.D. Archer (Head, Liaison Branch, BuPers, Margaret Young (Wilson’s Secretary), Capt. E.K. Auerbach (Commanding Officer, U.S. Navy Finance Center, Cleveland OH.), & Capt. T.P. Maggard (Acting Commanding Officer, U.S. Finance Center, Cleveland OH.) re/ “the [unsuccessful] claim for back pay from Mrs. Ludwig, wife of John D. Ludwig . . . Commissaryman third class, United States Navy . . . . USS Salmon (SS 573);” a large packet of corresp. (Feb.-July 1964) from San Diego constituents Dr. M. Jameson & his son, 1st Lt. Morey Jameson, Jr. (U.S.A.F.), Congressman Wilson, Col. Carl V. Schott (Congressional Inquiry Div., Office of Legislative Liaison, USAF), & Wilson secretaries, Margaret Young & Catherine Parham re/an extensive series of letters from the Jamesons (“Conservative Republicans supporting you in your elections to Congress”) questioning Lt. Jameson’s so-called “‘failure’ of R-77 on a Standardized Board Check.” Extensive commentary on this process as to missile system procedure & training used at Vandenberg AFB in the early 1960s; 1 letter (8/16/64) from San Diego constituent John Freeman Lowe (currently serving as a fireman abroad the USS Shields (DD 596) & his complaints as a S.D.S.C. graduate in not being assigned to duties more equitable to his “clerical and administrative skills;” 5 letters (July-Aug. 1964) from San Diego constituent Donald C. Riley, Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), & Capt. B.H. Shupper (Deputy Asst. Chief for Plans, BuPers) re/ Mr. Riley (“with over 17 years service”) is highly critical of the preferential treatment he says Filipinos are receiving while serving in the U.S. Navy. Capt. Shupper responded with a series of refutations of Mr. Riley’s accusation; 1 letter (7/29/64) from Benny W. McGehee (National President, Air Force Sergeants Assn.), office notes from Ed & Cathy, & a reply to Mr. McGehee from Congressman Wilson (8/18/64) re/ complaints about recent legislation inadequately compensating enlisted personnel; 5 letters (8/64) from HMCM A.N. Timmerman (Surgeon’s Office, 3rd Marine Div., FMFPAC), Congressman Wilson, Commander, C.H. Klind (Sp. Asst. for Liaison and Technical Info., BuPers), & Commander C.E. Johnson (Dir., Sp. Services Div., BuPers) re/ questions Mr. Timmerman raised in a letter to All Hands about retirement pay & percentage increases for good conduct & “extraordinary herorism” – there was a response from BuPers; 5 letters (8/64) from Pvt. Michael T. Brown (Marine Barracks, N.S., Treasure Island, S.F.), Congressman Wilson, LCRD A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), & Col. Cliff Atkinson, Jr. (Acting Dir. of Personnel, HQ, USMC) re/ Pvt. Brown’s projected discharge date was extended 30 days because of a summary court martial sentencing, which he constested. Family hardship proved insufficient for the USMC to relent on this extension of servitude; 1 letter (rec’d 8/4/64) from PFC Lewis Lowe, Jr. (Ft. Bragg, N.C.) & Wilson’s reply (8/5/64) re/ accusations of racism being practiced against African-Americans by both civilians & the military in North Carolina; 6 letters (July-Aug. 1964) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Mary J. Crawford, Congress-man Wilson, Capt. F.R. Drake (Acting Commandant, Eleventh Naval Dist.), office notes, & RAdm. Marshall E. Dornin (Commander, Cruiser-Destroyer Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet) re/ allegations made about excessive “Captains Masts” aboard the USS Charles Berry (DE 1035), Mrs. Crawford’s husband’s 13 year service, illness issues, back pay & the Navy’s responses to Mrs. Crawford; 2 Wilson office “Memos for the Record” (7/24 & 8/25/64) re/ Air Force recruit Charles L. Binkowski & Secretary Margaret Young’s assistance in helping him obtain inform-ation about alternate training assignments from which to choose.
