Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, office notes, memos, memorandums, & personnel records. Examples are: A small packet containing letters (Nov. 1963-Mar. 1964) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Lawrence S. O’Reilly, Congressman Wilson, Dr. David B. Carmichael (La Jolla), & RAdm. E.C. Kenney (The Surgeon General of the Navy) re/ Wilson’s much appreciated assistance in helping Dr. Carmichael obtain an “appointment as Captain in the United States Naval Medical Corps Reserve;” copies of 4 letters (May-June 1964) from Pvt. Ted A. Glover (Replacement Detachment, 4th Admin. Co., Fort Lewis, WA), Congressman Wilson, & Lt. Col. John C. Lippincott (Chief of Legislative Liaison, Office of theSecretary of the Army) re/ Inducted into the Army, Mr. Glover (who had both a BA & an MBA) would have had to enlist in the Army to become an officer with a supervisory & administrative position. At present, he could only be a clerk-typist or assigned to “the needs of the service” based upon those required of an inductees; office notes & copies of a letter (9/23/64) from Miss Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s secretay) & “Memo for the Record” (10/12/64) re/ San Diego constituent Mr. Duane L. Hall (T/Sgt., Air Force Reserve & teacher with an MA & an Admin. Credential) had requested a commission as an Education and Training Officer and was rejected because of his age; a small packet of letters (Ap.-May 1965) from National City constituent Mrs. Virginia R. Taylor, Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), & Capt. J.W. Sobein (Asst. Dir., Recruiting Div., BuPers) re/ a mother’s concern as to why her highly qualified son was unsuccessful in being accepted “as a candidate for the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corp” is responded to (with Wilson’s help) by BuPers; a small packet of letters (Mar.-June 1965) from Coronado constituent John Paul Morton, Congressman Wilson, Cmdr. C.H. Klindworth (Special Asst. for Liaison & Technical Information, BuPers), Capt. J.W. Sobien (Asst. Dir., Recruiting Div., BuPers), & Cmdr. F.B. Greene (Head, Officer Programs Branch, Recruiting Div., BuPers) re/ Mr. Morton, with Wilson’s assistance, is successful in cutting through red tape in order to be “selected for enrollment in the July class at the Officer Candidate School, Newport Rhode Island;” a small packet of letters (May-June 1965) from San Diego constituent Collin I. Oveland (USNR-R), “Maggie,” & Congressman Wilson re/ personal info. & a close acquaintence of Margaret Young, requests Wilson’s assistance in attempting to help “a young man with fine qualifications for possible selection into the Naval Aviation Cadet Program;” 4 letters (May-June 1965) from San Diego constituent Phillip Hansen, Congress-man Wilson, & Col. L. Conques (Chief, Congressional Inquiry Div., Office of Legislative Liaison, Dept. of the Air Force) re/ a Marine reservist’s attempt to be accepted for pilot training in the Air Force is unsuccessful; 5 letters (3/65) from AE1 Charley G. Jones (Air Transport Sqd. 8, U.S. Naval Air Station, Moffett Field, CA), Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congress-ional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), & Comdr. F. B. Greene (Head, Officer Programs Branch, Recruiting Div., BuPers) re/ Aviation Electrician Mate 1C Jones’ application for the Warrant Officer Program was still being processed & Jones requested Wilson’s assistance; “Memo To the Boss From Ed Gillenwaters” (9/14/65) re/ phone call from La Jolla constituent Mrs. Frank D. Sinclair & a friend of Wilson. Lots of personal com-mentary & emphasis on trying to get her son into the Air Force OCS program; a large packet containing letters, memos, memorandums & notes (July-Oct. 1965) from Elliot L. Cushman (Editor & Publisher, San Diego Independent), “Maggie,” Congressman Wilson, Cmdr. C.H. Klindworth (Special Asst. for Liaison and Technical Information, BuPers), Cmdr. F.B. Greene (Head, Officer Programs Branch, Recruiting Div., BuPers), Lt. Cmdr. H.B. Paisley (Head, Officer Candidate Section, Officer Program Branch, Recruiting Div., BuPers), Edgar M. Gillenwaters (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.), RAdm. H.H. Eighmy (Asst. Chief for Personnel and Professional Operations, BuMeds), & a copy of “Return to 88 Office” – form 513 re/ a long complicated struggle by a young man to finally be accepted into the NOCS program because of a minor vision defect; 5 letters (Sept.-Oct. 1965) from San Diego constituent Barbara Jean Folsom, Congressman Wilson, & Col. Dwight W. Covell (Congressional Inquiry Div., Office of Legislative Liaison, Dept. of the Air Force) re/ a staunch Wilson Republican (& her family too) requests & receives assistance in clarifying her qualifications to become a captain in the U.S. Air Force’s flight nurse program; 6 letters (Aug.-Dec. 1965) from San Diego constituent Ronald Lee Styn, Dr. R. Hewlett Lee (M.D., Dept. of Surgery, Palo Alto Medical Clinic), Congressman Wilson, Cmdr. C.H. Klindworth (Special Asst. for Liaison and Technical Information, BuPers), Catherine C. Parham (Wilson’s S.D. Secretary), & Cmdr. F.B. Greene (Head, Officer Programs Branch, Recruiting Div., BuPers) re/ a “Law Clerk to Judge James M. Carter in the Federal District Court in San Diego” seeks Wilson’s assistance to resolve a rejection by the Navy for medical reasons of his application “for a commission as a Navy Law Specialist.” Unfortunately for Mr. Styn, “Wilson could not resolve this problem.”
