10 packets of letters, memos, memorandums, government statements, etc. Examples are: Letters (Mar.-May 1964) from Lt. Calvin L. Jones (East Meadow, NY) & San Diego constituent D.D. Taleon (RMC, USN, Ret.) & Wilson’s replies re/ concerns over HR 9750’s omission of hospital beds for military retirees; Copies of “Statement of Mr. Rivers Opening Hearings on Construction of Military Hospital Facilities” (April 14, 1964, 6 pp.) & “Statement of Lt. General Leonard D. Heaton, MC, Surgeon General, United States Army, Before the Sub-committee on Construction of Military Hospital Facilities House Committee on Armed Services” (n.d., 6 pp.) re/ both statements provide important material on the subject, but crucial details are evident in the Surgeon General’s statement; copies of a letter (4/20/64) from L. Mendel Rivers (Chairman, Special Committee on Construction of Military Hospital Facilities) & Carl Vinson (Chairman, Senate Arrmed Services Committee) re/ inquiries into the subject of medical care for retired military personnel; 1 letter (4/16/64) from San Diego constituent Edward H. Kralemann (MM1/C, USN, Ret.) & Wilson’s reply (5/6/64) re/ concerns for HR 9750 & HR 7381 & those penny pinchers who would cut back on government care for military retirees; letters (4/20 & 4/25/64) from two U.S. Navy retirees & San Diego residents, Edward J. Paklos & Martin P. Lucas & Wilson’s replies (5/5/64) re/ concerns over plans to build 3 new hospitals (HR 9750) “with no beds being programed for retirees and dependents;” 1 letter (4/20/64) from J.H. Shaffer (V.P., Thompson Ramo Wooldridge, Inc., Cleveland, OH) & Wilson’s reply ((4/30/64) re/ a plea for cost effect use of “ ‘Total Energy’” in lowering energy costs in military hospitals so that additional beds can be facilitated without adding debt; letters (4/14 & 4/21/64) from San Diego constituents Carl Hoarman & William J. Byrd, Wilson’s replies (5/14/64), & a copy of Wilson’s letter (4/21/64) to Legislative Service Library of Congress with enclosure – John J. Ford, “The Week in Congress $10.4 million for Polish Hospital, How Much for Retired Care?,” Navy Times (n.d.), & a letter (5/5/64) from Thomas C. Lyons (Analyst in International Relations, Library of Congress) re/ Since the Navy Times two paragraphs were “grossly incomplete,” Mr. Lyon’s 3 page response provided much qualifying information to the article and the constituents complaints; 1 letter (4/30/64) from Pine Valley constituent Harold L. Gilbert (BMC, USN, Ret.) & Wilson’s reply (5/13/64) re/ a retiree is worried about potentially being deprived of medical care; 1 letter (5/27/64) from San Diego resident Joseph C. Brochek & a reply (6/4/64) from Congressman Charles S. Gubson re/”the need for continuing military medi-care for retired personnel and their dependents;” 1 letter (7/25/64) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Leland H. Collier & Wilson’s reply (8/13/64) re/ with a husband retired from a 30-year career in the Navy, volunteer at Balboa Hospital Mrs. Collier speaks out against any attempt to restrict retiree medical benefits; 6 letters (Jan.-Mar. 1965) from San Diego constituent J.C. Evans (Local Loan Co.), Congressman Wilson, PFC Joseph Whan Park (2nd General Hospital, Landstahl, Germany), & Lt. General Leonard D. Heaton (The Surgeon General, U.S. Army) re/ Hospitalized PFC Park was successful in being transferred to a hospital in Denver, Col. from Germany, but not to Balboa Hospital which Mr. Evans had requested.
