Scope and Contents

A collection of photos, newsletters, newspaper clippings, letters, memos & related items. Examples are: a small packet of letters (Feb.-Mar. 1964) from San Diego constituent Wilbur W. Bond (USN retired & Fleet Reserve Assn.), Congressman Wilson, Roy S. Benson (Asst. Chief of Naval Operations/Dir. of Naval Admin., Dept of the Navy) re/ a letter written to CNO Admiral Arleigh A. Burke in Oct. 1965 (copy enclosed) by Mr. Bond concerning the torpedoing of the USS Fechtler (DE 157) on 4 April 1944 in the Mediterranean and the failure of the Navy to give any citations commemorating this tragic incident and how this bureaucratic shuffle had allowed too much time to elapse for any official action to take place on Bond’s request; 4 letters (Ap.-May 1964) from National City constituent John Hammond, Congressman Wilson, & Major General J.C. Lambert (The Adjutant General, Dept. of the Army) re/ World War II (European Theater) army veteran PFC Hammond requested Wilson’s assistance in obtaining a copy of his Purple Heart Citation which he had been told at discharge he was eligible for. Army records did not sustain his claim, since he had been hospitalized for trench foot; a small packet of corresp. (Ap.-May 1964) from San Diego constituent Grover G. Grant (WW II & Korean War Navy veteran), Congressman Wilson, LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), Capt. C.E. Jackson (Dir., Enlisted Services & Records Div., BuPers), & Vashi K. Ransom (Navy Section, Military Personnel Records Center, St. Louis, MO) re/ Wilson’s and the Navy’s assistance enabled Mr. Grant to be issued five medals commemorating his military service; 5 letters (Ap.-May 1964) from Congressman Wilson, San Diego constituent Alexander A. Roleski (CWO, U.S. Navy, Ret.), LCDR A.J. Klein (Congressional Liaison Div., Office of the Secretary of the Navy), & Cmdr. H.L. Jenkins (Dir., Personal Affairs Div., BuPers) re/ Mr. Roleski’s request for assistance from Congressman Wilson results in some information that may help him trace down a pharmacist mate that could help him prove he was wounded in action in World War II & thus be eligible to receive a Purple Heart to help with his job search with the Federal Civil Service; 4 letters (June-July 1964) from Congressman Wilson, La Jolla constituent Mrs. William Heitzmann, & Major General J.C. Lambert (The Adjutant General, U.S. Army) re/ a request for a “duplicate of the Medal of Honor awarded to her grandfather, Moses A. Luce, and a copy of the citation which accompanied the decoration” resulted in her receiving “a copy of the citation pertinent to the award,” but not a copy of the medal; 1 letter (3/11/65) from Bill Graves (Office of Information, Dept. of the Navy) to Edward (Wilson’s Washington D.C. Office) & two sets (7 each) of 8 ½ x 11 glossy b/w photographs of Congressman Wilson congratulating 97 year-old Navy veteran (1889-1911) William H. Minor on his receiving a Two Timer Veterans Assocation Memorial Foundation Award; 2 copies of Light House -- “A Progressive Negro Paper,” Feb. 12, 1965, Vol. 26, No. 11 – featuring the photo of Congressman Wilson congratulating Mr. Minor & also San Diego Mayor Frank Curran’s Feb. 12, 1965 proclamation of “Negro History Week Observance Day;” 1 copy of National Two Timer newsletter for March 1965, vol. XVI, no. 9 re/ commentary on “our two congressman work together when it comes to Veterans Affairs and we should be proud of them” and the 300 person crowd in Washington at the presentation of the Award to William Minor; 1 letter (9/3/65) from Lakeside student Alfred L. Cabral, Jr. & Wilson’s reply (9/13/65) re/ stolen WW II medals at school lead this son to ask Wilson for assistance in obtaining replacements for his Dad’s medals; 1 Memo & 4 letters (Sept.-Oct. 1965) from Arlene (Memo To Washington Office), Congressman Wilson, & Capt. Lloyd V. Young (Special Asst., Office of the Secretary of Defense) re/ a request from Dr. William E. Everson (North Shores Adult Center) for “A list of all living San Diego County residents who are members of the Legion of Valor” resulted in Capt. Young referring instead to “the Legion of Merit” and indicating that such records “are not maintained on a geographical basis;” 7 letters (Oct.-Dec. 1965) from Congressman Wilson, William E. Everson (Ed.D, North Shores Adult School). Arthur Sylvester (Asst. Secretary of Defense), Edgar M. Gillenwaters (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.), & Lt. Col (Ret.) Robert M. Gaynor (National Adjutant, Legion of Valor) re/ further clarification on Dr. Everson’s search for a list of those in San Diego who have received medals qualifying them for membership in the Legion of Valor. Founded in 1890 & chartered by Con-gress in 1955, this organization was finally receiving qualified recognition from the Department of Defense.
