Scope and Contents

Twelve packets of corresp., including letters, postal cards, & memorandums. Examples are; Four letters (Jan.1964) from E. Goldstone (General Mgr., Don Britton Enter-prises, Hollywood, CA), Congressman Wilson, & Donald D. Britton (Britton Enterprises) re/ a request for Wilson’s assistance in helping Naval Reservist Roland Edward Roberts, now stationed aboard the USS Bon Homme Richard (CVA 31) in San Diego. Red tape & inadequate medical treatment aboard the ship for Roberts motivated the letters from Goldstone & Britton; 1 letter (2/2/64) from Edward E. Barry (Edgemoor Hospital, Santee, CA) re/ complaints about severe treatment there from a loyal Republican “all my life;” 1 letter (7/12/64) from San Diego constituent Martin L. Bertelsen, III (AMSAN, N.A.S. North Island, Coronado) & a reply from Wilson’s secretary, Catherine C. Parham re/ the Bertelsens’ baby’s “unfortunate experience you had at the Naval Hospital;” 4 letters (Aug.-Sept. 1964) from San Diego constituent Carl F. Thiel, Congress-man Wilson, & H.M. Webster (Veterans Admin., Regional Office, Los Angeles, CA) re/ a World War I veteran’s need for hospitalization & treatment runs into some bureaucratic problems; a large packet of corresp. (June 1964-Jan. 1965) from San Diego constituent & Navy wife Mrs. Opal Smith, Paul A. Winn (M.D., Anesthesiology, Torrance, CA), George O. Peake (M.D. Torrance, CA), Congressman Wilson, RAdm. H.H. Eighmy (Asst. Chief for Personnel and Professional Operations, BuMed), Brig. General Norman E. Peatfield (Executive Dir., Office For Dependent’s Medical Care, Office of the Surgeon General, U.S. Army), Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s San Diego office), & Edgar M. Gillenwaters (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.) re/ a long and complicated series of letters showing the failed attempts by this navy wife to receive Office For Dependent’s Medical Care payment for tubal ligation from a private medical facility; a postal card (rec’d 9/14/64) from Van Nuys resident Claude H. Hallock & Wilson’s reply (9/15/64) re/ a veteran supports the “new proposed VA Hospital program” in San Diego; 1 letter (9/10/64) from Vernon W. Hughes (Business Mgr., Local Union 465, IBEW) & Wilson’s reply (9/17/64) re/ a request for Wilson’s assistance in gaining re-admittance to the Long Beach Veterans’ Hospital for La Mesa constituent John R. Haynie; 5 letters (Sept.-Oct. 1964) from Congressman Wilson, San Diego constituent Richard W. Haase, H.M. Webster (Mgr., VA Regional Office, Los Angeles, CA), & Dr. M.T. Sax (Clinic Dir., VA Outpatient Clinic, Los Angeles) re/ a loyal Republican supporter & veteran receives assistance in finally getting VA dental treatment; 7 letters (Oct.-Dec. 1964) from San Diego constituent Harry Cohen, Congressman Wilson, Cmdr. A.G. Ellis (Office of the Secretary of the Navy), & RAdm. R.B. Brown (Acting Surgeon General, BuMed) re/ a retired Navy CPO’s medical bills used up his savings (such as cashed in War Bonds) and asks Wilson why this is necessary for retirees? He did not receive a favorable reply from RAdm. Brown; 4 letters (Oct. 1964) from Spring Valley constituent S.E. Perrot, Congressman Wilson, & RAdm. Harold J. Cokely (U.S. Naval Hospital, San Diego, CA) re/ complaints about medical/dental treatment at Balboa Hospital, “unless you [are] an officer;” 1 letter (rec’d 12/7/64) from San Diego constituent Mrs. Joseph M. Wojciechow-ski & Wilson’s reply (12/11/64) re/ a Navy wife’s negative experiences at Balboa Hospital & inadequite replies from BuMed indicated that Wilson would raise these issues in the Armed Services Committee; 6 letters (Sept,-Oct. 1965) from El Cajon constituent Mrs. A.L. Parsons, Congressman Wilson, H.M. Webster (Mgr. VA Regional Office, Los Angeles), & M.T. Sax (M.D., Clinic Dir., Outpatient Clinic, VA, Los Angeles) re/ a satis-factory outcome for a veteran who needed a new medicine from the San Diego Outpatient Clinic; 3 letters (Nov. 1965) from Lemon Grove constituent Dr. Frank B. Gigliotti (Past National Commander Regular Veterans Assn. of the United States), Margaret M. Young (Wilson’s San Diego Office), & Congressman Olin E. Teague (Chairman, Committee on Veterans Affairs, 89th Congress) re/ complaints about inadequacies in funding outpatient & non-service connected medical care for veterans & their spouses; 5 letters (Nov.-Dec. 1965) from San Diego constituent Hall V. Cartnaell, & Congressman Wilson re/ “your recent inquiry concerning the final legislative action on a ‘plan re medical care for military retirees and their dependents.”
