A collection of letters & a telegram: Examples are: letters (6/13, 22, 27 & 7/1/53, ) from Mrs. E. Heinberg & Wilson re/ her concerns about the need to raise “our Social Security, old age Pension to a somewhat more decent monthly allowance” – as a business owner she is anti-union & critical of foreign aid programs; letters (6/2 & 10/53) from Harold F. Cary (American Tuna Boat Assoc.) & Wilson re/ issues relating to discharges from the Armed Services; letters (6/16 & 23/53) from Rev. Walter H. Stark (First Congregational Church) & Wilson re/ “clergymen being covered by Social Security,” a letter from the Christian Century and Wilson’s comment that the Ways & Means Committee was overhauling Social Security; copy of a Wilson letter (6/24/53) to Mrs. Ulva M. Irwin (a La Mesa constituent of Congressman James Utt, 28th Dist.) re/ a request to “ support a measure which would reduce the age at which a female may start to draw benefits from the Social Security;” letters (1/4 & 1/15/54) from Chula Vista constituent Louis C. Pinkham & Wilson’s response re/ Pinkham’s concerns about consolidating the Civil Service Retirement Fund with the Social Security Fund. Wilson indicated keeping them apart if the consolidation took place; letters (1/16 &1/20/54) re/ Wilson replied negatively to constituent Richard Person’s request for Social Security in addition to receiving V.A. & Navy retirement; letters (7/25 & 8/8/55) re/ Wilson’s Admin. Assist. E. F. Terrar, Jr. replies to constituent Paul E. Bloomer’s suggestions about a yearly coupon book from the Social Security Dept.; letters (3/15 & 3/29/56) re/ “Social Security coverage for temporary employees of the Post Office Department;” the remainder of the letters in this folder are from 1957: Topics covered are: husband and wife drawing payments; information as to Senator Byrd; Wilson’s support for liberalization of Social Security laws and a reminder that the Social Security fund is covered by Government bonds; Social Security information to a constituent; legislation supporting compulsory Social Security for physicians; legislation pending that would reduce age 72 to 68 and earn any amount of money and still receive Social Security; a conservative rant from constituent Curtis Cope, who cites Dillard Stopes’ Social Security Fact and Fancy;” telegrams (7/25 & 7/29) – “protesting the repeal of 218-D Social Security Act providing for exclusion of police and firemen from Social Security;” reference to Dr. Townsend’s recommendation for a more progressive and humanitarian Social Security system; stapled packet of letters responding to questions about the actuarial and financial status of Social Security.
