Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, government pamphlet, a public law excerpt and statistical material: these are filed from Sept.-December 1960, but include early letters. Examples are: letters (Aug.-Sept.) re/ an El Cajon constituent’s husband was behind 3 years in support payments for his three boys, Wilson tried to help, but Social Security privacy law did not permit the spouse to obtain his address; letters (10/7 & 10/11) re/ Wilson sends a 76 year old constituent information which explains “the new grant-in-aid medical program;” letter (10/17) from the Social Security Admin. “To Members of Congress” and attached copy of “Changes in old-age, survivors, and disability insurance under the Social Security Amendments of 1960;” letters (Sept.-Oct.) re/ responses to an inquiry from S.D. constituent Grace L. Frees indicated that “the Social Security was amended too late for you to receive coverage for the years you were employed by your son;” letters (2/11/58 & Oct. & Nov. 1960) re/ S.D. constituent Edwin S. Cole does not have enough coverage to be eligible for disability benefits, but would “be eligible for retirement benefits upon reaching age 65;” letters and note (Oct.-Dec.) re/ responses to inquiry from S.D. constituents Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd E. Collins as to amounts of SS monthly payments they would receive; letters (Oct.-Nov.) re/ responses to inquiry from S.D. constituent Louis Fackham as to his military and civil service employment in terms of any Social Security eligibility; a Committee Print entitled Brief Summary of Social Security Amendments of 1960 A Very Brief Topical Outline Summary of the Principal Changes Made By H.R. 12580, August 31, 1960 (74 pp.); letters (June-Nov.) re/ letters (June-Nov.) re/ responses to S.D. constituent Mrs. Jewel C. Keck’s disability claim; letters (Oct.-Nov.) re/ Wilson assists Cmdr. B. H. Bush in obtaining maximum earnings for 1958-59 thus correcting a Navy Disbursing error; letters (Nov.-Dec.) re/ praise from S.D. constituent Miss Hazel Hart: “Lately I have had occasion to call on the Social Security Office for information and help. I wish to say the people in this office are very pleasant and very helpful. It seems to me they are a good example for all government bureaus and thought it only right to give praise, where praise is due;” a letter (8/4/60) from the Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare to Wilson. “I am enclosing three tables that I think will be of interest to you and your constituents . . . . Nearly 13 ¾ million persons were receiving old-age, survivors, and disability insurance benefits at the end of December 1959 at a monthly rate of $845 million.”
