Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, a photo & certificate, memos, office notes, conference and program material, memorandums, Public Relations materials & a news clipping. These are filed in random fashion as to chronological sequence but the early part of 1965 is filed last in this folder. Examples are: letters (3/65-7/65) re/ planning for and speeches to the NAEA & CNAEA convention at the Catamaran in Mission Bay in June; letters (Aug. & Sept. ’65) re/ information on the planned October convention of the Western Electronic Manufacturing Association in Mission Valley; letters (12/16 & 12/29/65) re/ Edgar M. Gillenwaters (Wilson’s Admin. Asst.) & William S. Mackenszie (President, Assoc. Students of Stanford Univ.) plan for a series of discussions relating to issues and personalities in California politics; letters (8/20 & 8/24/65) re/ Wilson accepts the invitation to be guest speaker at the Cajon Valley Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars on November 17; letters (12/2 & 12/7/65), Chula Vista Rotary Club certificate & photograph re/ Wilson’s appearance at the club on November 19; letter & memo (10/22 & 11/3/65) re/ “invitation from Arthur Rivkin of the Boys’ Clubs of San Diego inviting the Boss to a meeting on November 17 at 6:30” but Wilson was already speaking that evening to the Cajon Valley Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars; letters (Oct.-Nov. ’65) re/ Wilson’s speech before the GOP Alabama Jubilee at Birmingham in October; letter (10/21/65) and information sheet from Tony Tiano, Moderator - “Shirtsleeve Session” by KNME-TV Channel 5, Albuquerque, NM re/ invite to Wilson to participate since he would be attending the Western State’s Republican Conference in Nov.; letters (Oct.-Nov. ’65) re/ information related to the annual luncheon meeting of the New Mexico Chapter of the Public Relations Society of America, meeting with Wilson and Richard Nixon’s letter indicating his arrival that day in Albuquerque prohibited his attending the luncheon; letters & office notes (May & June ’65) re/ Wilson’s interest in making “a speech on the shame of our great nation not building passenger liners as Italy, France, England and even Russia are doing . . . .;” stapled packet of conference program materials, letters & telegram (July-Nov. ’65) re/ the Western States Republican Conference in Albuquerque, NM on Nov. 4-6 ’65 and material related to planning for the Western States Campaign Management Seminar in Los Angeles in December; Memorandum TO: The Boss From: Ed (11/2/65) re/ unused airline tickets from Wilson’s Alaska trip; letter (11/1/65) from George L. Hall to Wilson re/ “On behalf of the Freedom’s Foundation Club of O’Farrell Junior High School, I wish to express our appreciation to you for appearing at our school and before the student body;” letters (Aug. & Sept. ’65) re/ Wilson accepts the invitation to speak to the Caltech Young Republicans at Pasadena on the evening of Tuesday, October. His topic will be: “Does America Need a Rubber Stamp Congress;” 2 letters (1/20/65) to Wilson from Mrs. Paul Pate (Birmingham, Alabama) and Mrs. John Holm (Fairbanks, AK) each thanking Wilson for his speech to their organization; a letter (10/18/65) from Congressman John H. Buchanan, Jr. (6th Dist. Ala.) thanking Wilson for doing an outstanding job as a speaker; a letter (10/27/65) from William Quirk (VP & General Mgr. Pacific Telephone and Telegraph Co., S.D.) to Wilson re/ speaking to our management people – “your remarks were ‘eye openers” to a number of our people;” Speed Writer Message, news clipping and letter (Oct.-Nov. ’65) re/ speech in Anchorage, Alaska at an Eisenhower Birthday Dinner and “Campaign Leader Says: Computerized Congress Being Operated By A Push-Button Executive.” Wilson told his audience that the Republican Party was prepared to offer greater outside assistance in making Alaska a two-party state;” letters (Oct. & Nov. ’65) re/ recent speech in El Cajon assessing negatively the current administration; a copy – 3 pages legal size – of the “Remarks of Former Senator Barry Goldwater at the Eisenhower Birthday Dinner, Oct. 14, 1965, Los Angeles – Subject: ‘Government that serves; not government that masters’;” 8 page News Release from DOD (10/7/65) re/ Remarks of Secretary of Defense Cyrus Vance at the National Security Industrial Assoc. 22nd Annual Dinner with a focus on the recent remarks of Lin Piao, Vice Chairman of the Central Committee of Chinese Communist Party; letters (10/14 & 20/65) re/ Wilson’s speech to the Orange County Advertising Club in December; letters & office note (Aug.-Sept. ’65) re/ Wilson speech in October at the “GOP – Alabama Jubilee;” letters (9/27 & 10/7/65) re/ Wilson replies to William Quirk (S.D. AT& T) as to his looking forward to being with you and your management people on October 18 . . . . at the Cotillion Room of the El Cortez Hotel at 11:00 a.m.;” office note (3/8/65) & “Memorandum To: The Boss From: Edgar” (2/9/65) re/ more information needed as to dinner & speech in May for the Science Research Society of America; stapled packet containing letters, memorandums & news clipping (11/64-3/65) re/ complication and failed plans to have Wilson give a speech to the Raleigh Advertising Club in Raleigh, N.C.; letters (Jan.-Mar. ’65) re/ Wilson would be giving a speech to the Lincoln Day Dinner in Muncie, Indiana to held on March 22nd; letters (2/7 & 25/65) re/ “Dear Bob- I thought your address was superior. Best Regards! George [Todt, The National Society of the Sons of the American Revolution];” letters (2/15 & 23/65) re/ Wilson speaking to the N.C. Advertising Club on March 16 & enclosed letter from Watt Huntley (Carolina Power & Light Company); a letter (2/10/65) from John A. Newkirk (M.D. & Chairman, Public Affairs Committee, Illinois State Medical Society) to Wilson re/ thanking him for appearing “before our group last week in Washington;” letters (2/4 & 2/9/65) re/ luncheon in Los Angeles and request for a copy of Wilson’s speech – Gillenwaters replied that the speech was “off the cuff” and no copy was available; “Memo to the Boss From: Maggie” & letters (Jan.-Feb.’65) re/ Wilson speech to the Annual State Young Republicans Convention in Milbrae, CA. on February 6th. Wilson planned to rent a car and do some shopping before going to the Thunderbird Hotel.
