Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, a discussion of California agricultural problems and a number of copies of Senate and Assembly Joint Resolutions: these are filed from April through November. Examples are: a stapled packet containing a letter (4/9/58) from Assemblyman Lloyd W. Lowrey to Wilson and attached copies of materials stressing the need for research on irrigation and drainage in California as related to agriculture – 24 pages; letters (4/8 & 15/58) re/ Wilson acknowledges receipt of copies of Assembly Joint Resolutions No. 3 and 4; letters (4/3 & 15/58) re/ Wilson receiving Senate Joint Resolution No. 13; letters (4/1 &15/58) re/ receiving Assembly Joint Resolutions No. 5, 8, 10 and 12 and House Resolution No. 17; subsequent letters and Senate and Assembly Joint Resolutions are contained in this folder for such Senate numbers as 7 (tax deductions to parents of college students) , 4 (sea water conversion & demo plant in S.D.), 21, 3 (school lunch program), 5, 8, 26, 7 (completion of Corning Canal & construction of Red Bluff Diversion Dam) and Assembly numbers 5, 10, 11, 9 and 14; additional items from late April to November are: letters (4/23 & 30/58) re/ a resolution relative to the establishment of a Soil and Water Conservation Laboratory in California;” letters (4/30 & 5/6/58) re/ copies of Senate Joint Resolution No. 10, 11 and 12 (social security, naming of nuclear ballistic missile subs and Flood Insurance Act of 1962), letters (4/28 & 5/6/58) re/ Senate Resolution No. 10 (Air space control), letter (5/7/58) & attached copy of CA Senate Resolution No. 32 (Civil Defense); letters (Feb.-Apr. 1958) re/ responses to inquiry from S.D. constituent M. M. Sallee’s desire to obtain information on the sale of California State Government lands; letters (4/22 & 26/58) re/ Wilson receiving Senate Concurrent Resolution No. 17 and Assembly Joint Resolution No. 11 (salt water conversion and flood control); letters (7/11 & 17/58) re/ CA Assemblyman George G. Crawford recommends Wilson support H. R. 3, the Smith Bill – Wilson agreed; letters (8/8 & 12/58) re/ CA Governor Goodwin Knight sent Wilson an analysis of H. R. 13280 – the Domestic Minerals Exploration and Stabilization Act and urged Wilson to support it; letters(7/17 & 22/58) re/ the CA Dept. of Natural Resources was sending Wilson a copy of “California Lands – Ownership, Use and Management;” postal card and letter (7/16 & 22/58) re/ La Jolla constituent Miss Helen Marion Baker advises Wilson of her opposition to Assemblyman Hegland’s bill No. 3993 to put school taxes in a common fund; a letter (6/23/58) from Newton B. Drury (Chief, Div. of Beaches and Parks, CA Dept. of Natural Resources) re/ “Senate Bill No. 1318 & House Resolution No. 3121 and advising Wilson of the State Park Commission’s support; letters (7/14 & 24/58) re/ William N. Davis, Jr. (Historian, State Archives) suggests that inactive papers in Wilson’s office be transferred to the State Archives; letters (10/31 & 11/7/58) re/ S.D. constituent Hisae Shima (a senior at S.D. High School) opposes Proposition No.17 which lowers the sales tax and increases the income tax. As of November 7 the Proposition had been defeated.
