Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, booklets, newsletters, government forms & publications: these cover items from January through December, but most focus on September through December. Examples are: A stapled packet containing letters & other items (Jan.-June) related to the problems of Captain E. H. C. Fredericks (C.O. of USS Wasp) and the Motor Vehicles Dept. – it appears to be a complicated story; 2 copies of Your Social Security booklet (Jan. ’59); letters (3/18 & 3/25) re/ Miss Linda Connerley (a junior taking history at Point Loma High School) requested Wilson’s opinion on Capital Punishment, should it be replaced with a life sentence? Wilson responded that the death penalty was needed to control major crimes; letters (9/8 & 9/14) from Mrs. Betty Grace and Wilson re/ her problem as a recently naturalized citizen in obtaining unemployment insurance. Wilson forwarded a copy of her letter to CA Senator Jack Schrade; a copy of California’s Health (Vol. 17, No. 8, Oct. 15, 1959) re/ “Present Status of Short-Doyle Act” and other issues and reports; a copy of The Short-Doyle Act for Community Mental Health Services (State of California Dept. of Mental Hygiene) and enclosed letters, notices and a speech related to this topic; letters (Oct.-Nov.) re/ CA. Division of Mines and their March 1957 Mineral Information booklets; letters (10/7 & 21 & 11/2) re/ the attempts of Wilson & Dr. Telford (President, San Diego County Medical Assoc.) to help Dr. Georges Argoud obtain his California license to practice medicine. A French citizen, Dr. Argoud emigrated to the U.S. in 1949, graduated from UCLA and served two years in the U.S. Army then did his medical training in Switzerland, he also became an American citizen. What a complicated mess for this man in trying to obtain a license to practice medicine in California; letters (11/18 & 24) and a copy of a resolution “Integration in Agriculture,” adopted by the California State Board of Agriculture on November 16, 1959; letters (Oct.-Nov.) concerning the lack of a State Mental Hospital in San Diego, since Patton was the only one available – a 250 mile drive for those visiting relatives in the institution; letters (11/22 & 12/29) re/ Imperial Beach constituent Mrs. Mary A. Baker’s suggestions for reforming the California Welfare Program to enhance income potential to meet the need for food and clothing; letters (10/2 & 10/3) re/ San Diego Attorney Joseph B. Colton hopes to obtain a Superior Court judgeship from Governor Knight; letters (11/4 & 11/14) & news clipping “Rep. Wilson Hails Knight’s Senate Plans” re/ a discussion of moderate and “old-time-hard-core conservatism republicanism” from a 39 year old housewife and Wilson’s response; letters (11/6 & 11/12) re/ a political science major at San Diego State College asks Wilson to send him a copy of the California Constitution. Wilson indicated that he could send only federal publications and to contact CA Senate Fred Kraft; letters (12/4 & 12/12) re/ La Mesa constituent Frank A. Ferrone discusses the recent Thanksgiving traffic deaths and injured and suggests needful remedies. Wilson referred him to Assemblyman Sheridan Hegland since your suggestions have merit.
