A collection of letters, a booklet, pamphlets, news clippings, telegrams and other items: these are filed from December to June, 1965. As with previous State Government folders much of this folder covers constituent requests to Wilson for assistance and his response that it was not in his jurisdiction. Examples are: a letter (12/20) from Lawrence E. Benson (El Cajon) and Wilson’s reply (12/30) re/ Benson refers to an article in the San Diego Tribune on Thanksgiving Day that proposed a tuition fee to be paid for all students attending California Junior Colleges. It failed to recognize the basic reasons for offering higher education for all, irrespective of the financial status of families; letters (Sept.-Dec.) re/ Wilson helped constituent Laurence F. Ehmke (Ocean Beach Bait and Tackle business), who was having “a difficult time in regaining his California motor vehicle operator’s license,” by sending his letters to CA Senator Jack Schrade; packet of correspondence (Oct.-Nov.) re/ the complicated problems for Orton F. Grinnell (Norfolk, Virginia) in obtaining his California Operator’s License; letters (10/18 & 11/3) re/ an El Cajon constituent’s problems with the Food Stamp Program – Senator Schrade’s misunderstanding was corrected by Wilson; letters (10/11 & 13) re/ “a young mother who is seeking employment benefits;” letters (10/6 & 13) Congressman Wilson and CA State Senator Schrade agree that a recent Mobile Home Park Law works a considerable hardship on this business; letters (Sept.) and initiative petition to state constitution “to restore to local agencies, the cities and counties, the right to enact and enforce local regulations to control sex crimes;” letters (6/17 & 9/29) re/ Assemblyman Burgener reminds Mrs. Evelyn MacVern (San Francisco) that he was “well aware of the serious deficiency in the present federal law concerning ATD Funds for those eighteen and over;” letters (9/27 & 9/29) re/ a Spring Valley constituent’s “daughter’s problems with the State Unemployment Office;” letters from Wilson(9/27 &28) to three San Diego constituents re/ State Employment and Re-Training, sidewalks for bicyclists and laws pertaining to operations of automobiles, and a freeway “built in your neighborhood [Nile St.];” letters (Sept.) & news clipping from a Las Vegas paper re/ “the children’s home situation there is truly devastating;” letters (9/16 & 9/22) re/ another example of children suffering because of parental issues; a letter(9/16) from Wilson to S.D. constituent Mrs. Agnes Thorn re/ “concerning your grandson’s non-resident status in college;” letters (9/3 & 14) re/ a divorce in California for a Fall River, MA resident; a copy of Selected Economic Data on the California Economy published by the Economic Research Department of the Bank of America, Sept. 1965 (65 pages); letters (8/9, 27 & 30) re/ Linda Vista constituent James L. Morris’ attempt to regain his automobile that was lost in a federal government narcotics raid; letters (July & Aug.) re/ Wilson and Governor Brown communicate about suggestions for a California youth of the “Young American Medals for Bravery and Service Award,” two local newspaper boys were suggested by Wilson; letters (8/16 & 20) from Wilson re/ “veteran’s exemption on property tax” and “the need to separate young multiple sclerosis patients from senile and terminal cases in California hospitals;” letters (8/11 & 16) & telegram (8/11) re/ personal commentary and the revocation of a son’s driver’s license – Wilson suggested they contact Senator Schrade; a packet containing letters (7/22, 26 & 8/12) and attached copies of State of California Dept. of Agriculture, Bureau of Plant Quarantine re/ “Resume . . . as of June 1965” and “September 11, 1964”- this was in response to Wilson receiving an inquiry about shipping two mango trees to his son in California; letters (June & July) re/ various state and local issue such as “Synanon in San Diego,” “Taxation of Corporate Income in California,” “concern over the lack of control, supervision and equipment for young children in the State of California, and a Santee constituent’s difficulty with the Dept. of Employment Claims Supervisor; letters (June & July) re/ complaints about so-called inequity between state college faculty and administrative salaries with less being offered to administrators.
