Scope and Contents

A collection of letters and news clippings: these are filed from March 1953 to November 1955. Examples are: letters (3/10 & 3/13/53) from Assist. Commissioner of Internal Revenue and from Congressman Wilson re/ reference a request for a ruling on the San Diego Community Theater in Balboa Park; letters (3/15 & 4/1/54) from Nic Cordilroni (President, Commercial Fishing Boat Owners and Wilson’s reply re/ discussion on H. R. 8300 and favorable views; letters (10/25, 11/17 & 18/54) from Wilson and the Office of Internal Revenue re/ letters regarding Joe Romero and Robert Even; letters (1/25/55, 4/11 & 4/16/53) and an Evening Tribune news clipping (4/1/53) re/ “Defense Area Tax Help Seen” and subsequent discussions; single page letters (2/19 & 4/19/55) re/ inquiry as to Section 37 of the 1954 IRS code and information to S.D. County Assessor Eddy from Congressman Carl Vinson as to hearing on tax structure; letters (Feb. & Mar./55) & news clipping re/ Superior Court Judge Joe Shell’s “10-Hour Battle” with his federal income tax form and subsequent queries on tax reform; letters (Feb. & Mar./55) re/ income tax exemptions for the Oneira Women’s Club of San Diego; a letter (7/22/55) from Superintendent Glenn E. Murdock (La Mesa-Spring Valley School District) and a reply (8/8/55) from Wilson Administrative Assistant E. F. Terrar, Jr. re/ the District’s hope that Convair Plant No. 2 and Rohr Aircraft Corp. would not be placed back on the tax rolls, since the District received Federal moneys under Public Law 815 and 874 to help provide the costs of education for the children of the parents that were employed in these plants; letters (Sept. & Oct./55) re/ responses from Wilson and the IRS to a complaint from Alfred A. Dustin (La Jolla, CA) that the privacy of his federal tax records had been violated by allowing the State of California access to his records – “I have always regarded myself as an ‘unemployed transient in California;’” letters (10/31 & 11/29/55) re/ County Supervisor James Robbins complains about the loss of our local property tax base because of the acquisition of land by the federal government. He lists the lost revenue to school districts with the acquisition of the Santa Margarita Ranch to create Camp Pendleton Marine Base; letters (10/28 & 11/29/55) re/ County Supervisor De Graff Austin wants some type of “federal in-lieu payment to local municipalities” to cover the loss in San Diego County by the increase in Federal investment in property here. We are one of the poorest counties in California.
