Scope and Contents
A large collection of letters, memorandum & other items: these are filed from June to December, but also cover letters back to January. Many of these represent constituent requests for Wilson’s assistance. Examples are: letters (June – March) from Edwin K. Harris & Wilson re/ Mr. Harris thanks Wilson for his primary victory and his interest in taking the welfare “of us old people and invalids” – he suggests several reforms that are needed to increase government support for those in need; letters (June) re/ Wilson helps John K. McCormick “concerning your income tax refund;” letters (May-July) re/ Wilson assists William Columbick, Sr. obtain information as to a $600 exemption for retired federal employees; a large packet of letters going back to 1959 re/ “the depressed condition of the San Diego tuna boats and the generally poor financial condition of the fleet as a whole”- Arthur De Fever (Naval Architect and Marine Surveyor) while recognizing the foreign imports problem is concerned about a new issue – the depreciation scale for tuna boats and the IRS attack on this concept; letters (June-July) re/ Wilson assists James G. Zumwalt meet with the IRS District Director in Los Angeles to reconcile a tax problem with the San Diego office; letters (March-July) re/ the problems of Mr. & Mrs. Jesse S. Jamison (Imperial Beach) as to their income tax refund from 1956; letters (June-Aug.) re/ audit issues for L. M. Hudson; letters (May-Aug.) re/ Wilson helps Chula Vistan Wellington J. Cole receive income tax refund after a delay of 6 months; letters (July-Aug.) re/ 1959 income tax refunds for Henry Guske & W.A.Strawn; letters (Aug.-Sept.) re/ missing 1958 income tax return for Mr. & Mrs. J.D. Cook; letters (Aug.-Sept.) re/ Mr. & Mrs. James J. Patton, Sr. of El Cajon thank Wilson for his assistance over the years in obtaining income tax refunds; letters (Aug.-Oct.) re/ 1959 income tax refunds for Francis W. Stone, Cmd. George K. Stoddad, ,Raymond Ortiz, Mr. & Mrs. Julius C. Haas & Mr. & Mrs. John R. Healey; a “Memorandum For Leon RE: Refunds due from 1959 Income Tax Returns” this is a list of constituents receiving refunds. The memorandum also notes – “All of these people and many more complain bitterly about the rudeness of the people involved, lack of cooperation, etc.;” letters (Oct.-Nov.) re/ Wilson assists Tom Principato obtain information from the Los Angeles IRS office – but “I regret that the District Director stands firm in his declaration concerning the disallowance of the exemptions claimed for your parents;” letters (Oct.-Nov.) re/ Wilson assists Corporal Virgil Brendlinger of Imperial Beach obtain his 1959 income tax refund; letters (Nov.-Dec.) re/ Wilson helps Mrs. Richard J. Simpson of La Mesa “relative to your 1959 income tax return” which the IRS could not locate.
