Scope and Contents

A bulky collection of an office note, a news clipping, government documents, letters, telegrams & other items: These are filed from January to December, but initially contained a few items from 1958-1960. Examples are: letters & news clipping (1958-1959) re/ in-lieu taxes paid to school districts by the Federal government to avoid refunding being demanded by aircraft companies; letters (59-60) re/ property tax assessment in new subdivision in Chula Vista; note & copies of Report No. 1577 (August Furniture Co., Inc.) re/ S. 2779 An Act Relating to … August Furniture Co.); letters (12/60-1/61) re/ tax problems of the Davis family of Coronado with the State of Maryland - In Re: Ann and K.B. Davis; letters (12/60-1/61) re/ Wilson assists teacher W.I. Darnell of La Mesa obtain information from the Library of Congress “concerning the levying of taxes on purchases made outside the taxing state;” letters (Mar. & Apr. ’61) re/ “the election of certain small businesses as to taxable status;” stapled packet of correspondence (July 1960-March 1961) re/ tax complications for W. C. Cline of Lakeside and R.P. Miller of Chula Vista (Delta Electrical Engineering Co. and the R.P.M. Electric Co.); letters (8/60 - 3/61) re/ “tax problem involving an election of Prince & Company, Inc. to be taxed as a partnership;” letters (Mar. & Apr. ‘61) re/ Wilson assists E. M. Nash, Jr. (Nash Industrial Equipment Co.) obtain an income tax refund; letters & IRS statement (Mar. & Apr. ’61) re/ problems arising from the termination of an election by a small business corporation; letters (June-Aug.’61) re/ John S. Bowker of La Mesa thanks Wilson “for your help in getting my income tax refund straightened out;” letters & telegram (Feb. – Aug. ’61) & a copy of 87th Cong., 1st Sess. H.R. 1996 . . . A BILL To Amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1954 to make certain technical revisions in the income and administrative provisions re/ the concerns of R. Vern Beckwith (Controller, Kinetics Corp.); a large number of letters and other items (1960 & 1961) re/ tax problems for Frye & Smith, Ltd. A California corporation to be taxed as a partnership – “an old San Diego company, now in its 67th year” employing 55 people and enjoying the benefits of a Small Business Administration Loan;” letters (July-Sept. ’61) re/ Mr. & Mrs. Urbanick’s income tax return problem was resolved with the help of Wilson; letters (Aug.-Sept. ’61) re/ Wilson assists El Cajon constituent Cornelius McCarthy as to the taxability of his Civil Service pension; letters (June & July ’61) re/ the complaints of Mr. & Mrs. Eldon Proctor as to the “injustices that exist under our present income tax system” for low salaried workers and small businesses; letter & National Federation of Independent Business ballot no. 268 from Dr. B. Layton of Chula Vista – a conservative’s statement; letter & statement (8/7/61) from The American Bankers Association re/ “Savings and Loans Confuse Tax Issue, A.B.A. Declares;” letters (July-Oct. ’61) re/ Wilson assists. R.M. Haas obtain a refund check; letters (Sept. & Oct. ’61) & a copy of Senator Thruston B. Morton’s speech in the Senate entitled “Proposed Taxes on Income Earned Abroad by American Business Firms,” Congressional Record re/ a conservative’s rejection of President Kennedy’s proposed reforms; letters (Sept.-Oct. ’61) re/ DOJ relative to tax liabilities of the estate of John F. Andrews, deceased; letters & other items (Mar.-June ’61) re/ complications for Mr. & Mrs. Donayre as to overpayments on their 1957 & 1958 returns which were credited to the tax due for 1954 – the still owed a balance of $57.64 plus interests; letters (10/61) re/ complaints as to having the IRS District Office located in Los Angeles; letters (Sept. & Oct. ’61) re/ issues facing the Fleet Reserve Association including “why were the Armed Forces overseas being taxed on their incomes while member of the Civil Service and other civilians were exempt from income tax while serving overseas?”; letters (Aug. – Nov. ’61) re/ anti-labor commentary from Park L. Davis Company (Sheet Metal Work) who is now retired in San Diego and tax issues; letters (Oct. ’61 ) re/ Wilson assists the Murray’s of El Cajon in obtaining their income tax refund; letters (Nov.-Dec. ’61) re/ John R. Ward (serving on Wilson’s Speaker’s Bureau) requests Wilson’s assistance concerning his 1960 Income Tax overpayment; stapled-packet of letters (1960-1961) re/ a complicated set of tax problems for Chula Vista constituents Mr. & Mrs. Harold Farnsworth that originated in the 1950s, Wilson’s assistance & communications from the Los Angeles IRS office; a letter (12/6/61) from Wm. F. Cowan (General Mgr., Calavo Growers of California) & Wilson’s reply (12/14/61) re/ Cowan thanked Wilson for meeting with the Growers & hoped he understood their position on the proposed legislation on the taxation of true farmer cooperatives.
