Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, newspaper excerpts, petitions, photocopies of banks statements & income tax forms, telegrams, office notes & other items: Selected Examples are: Public Accountant Ray Wells is concerned about computation and collection of interest for a client and includes an editorial from the June 28, 1962 Wall Street Journal criticizing the recent Supreme Court decision on corporate mergers as giving the government “A Still Bigger Bludgeon;” a large number of letters, photocopies of banks statements & income tax forms, affidavits & other items concerning the actions of Mrs. Coralyn A. Conant’s request (with others) for an open inquiry regarding the misuse of government appropriations, perjury and tax evasion by Captain Tracy D. Cuttle –“a preliminary hearing has been held at the Marine Recruit Depot;” a stapled packet of letters, telegrams & other items from Guilford H. Whitney re/ deductibility for Federal income tax purposes of gifts made to the Community Concourse Committee for the purpose of aiding in the construction of a group of buildings relating to civic and cultural activities and designated as Centre City; letters & office note re/ El Cajon constituent C.D. Judge “with respect to the T. A. Daugherty Coal Company” and the IRS; letters re/ Lakeside constituent W. C. Kline and IRS; letters to Members of Congress from the Council of State Chambers of Commerce re/ Cost of Federal Programs to the States and an attached tax burden apportionment; letters re/ the San Diego Fire and Police Departments’ legal action against the City of San Diego to determine the legality of certain changes in the Police and Fireman’s Retirement System; letters re/ the California Municipal Utilities Association on the Treasury Department’s action on the exemption of banks and life insurance companies from tax on their municipal bond holdings; letters re/ Kinetics Corporation and Leon Parma (Wilson’s Admin. Assistant); letters from constituents Paul Smith and John J. Motley (San Diego) re/ compliant about IRS discourteous treatment & bill to exempt $1500 of the salary of teachers from income tax – Mr. Motley diatribe against teachers; Hayward City Council Resolution No. 62-116 re/ opposition to Treasury Department’s move to remove the current exemption for interest income from municipal bonds; letters re/ The First Baptist Church of La Mesa and religious non-profit corporation exemption status & financial report; stapled packet of letters re/ the status of the case of Anthony F. Riforgiato – won $1500 in Caliente race track and did not report it to the IRS.
