Un-American Activities, 1960
Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, news clippings, editorials, telegrams, brochures, pamphlets, periodical excerpts, & photo copy of government document. Most of these items follow a similar pattern of conservative support for Un-American Activities in both Houses of Congress. They are filed from August to December. Examples are: letters from Vice President Richard Nixon, Wilson & Col. Clarence E. Koeppe (La Jolla) re/ support and praise for the activities of the Military Order of the World Wars; letters from Wallace Johnson (Oceanside), news clipping and editorial from the San Diego Union re/ a strong stand for Americanism, criticism of the U.N., Russia and China; letter (2/19) from Ralph R. Allen (San Diego) to Wilson “that our churches are infiltrated with cunism;” a copy of Selected Government Publications Relating to Un-American Activities, U.S. Government Printing Office; a letter (9/14) from M. N. Rosenbluth to Editor, The San Diego Union – “I was shocked by the article of Henry Love attacking Dr. Harold Urey as a Communist-fronter in an attempt to further the reelection campaign if Rep. Wilson. Here is one vote at least that is switching from Wilson to Wencke until the former decisively repudiates unscrupulous tactics of his supporters;” letters (9/19 & 9/27) re/ Crawford High School Journalism Teacher Richard V. Bertain requests Wilson to furnish a copy of the film Operation Abolition to use in his classes; letters & telegram (Aug.-Sept.) re/ support for a lecture series “School for Anti-Communists;” an “Urgent Public Issue” 7 page brochure requesting “Freedom for Morton Sobell;” letters (Oct.) re/ a constituent supports the Senate hearing of Dr. Linus Pauling; packet of letters, telegram, office notes re/ support for more showing of the film Operation Abolition in San Diego; page 23 “Washington Pro & Con – Should the House Committee on Un-American Activities Be Abolished, The American Legion Magazine, Jan. 1961 and copy of letter (2/17)from Grace Hudson Hon. James Roosevelt (26th Dist. CA) supporting the abolition of the House Committee; 3 page letter (12/13) from Norman R. Beck (Seaman, USS Hollister) to Wilson indicated all the things he was doing to fight Communism & Wilson’s reply (12/23) praising Beck; a letter (12/31) from Congressman Roosevelt to “Dear Colleague” pointing out his two main arguments for the abolition of the Committee; photocopy of House Committee Report No. 2237 – Annual Report For The Year 1960 – Committee On Un-American Affairs – 4 pages; other messages in this folder covered topics such as: subversive organizations and Communist activities in the Caribbean area, the La Jolla Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution interest in combatting Communism in this area, support for the Subversive Activities Control Board, support for Wilson’s H. R. 8429, support for the loyalty oath, a constituent’s requests federal booklets from Wilson on “Communist Target – Youth,” “Communist Indoctrination Efforts Among Our Youth,” and “Guide to Subversive Organizations;” letters (7/22 & 8/2) & large fold-out pamphlet from testimony to the House Un-American Committee Will You Be Free To Celebrate Christmas?; letters (July & Aug.) – especially from J. Edgar Hoover praising one of Wilson’s constituents & commenting on the Communist menace in the U.S.; letters (3/16 & 3/21) J. Stuary (Friends Committee on National Legislation) covers the concept of the U.S. becoming the world’s most powerful warmaker & Wilson replies.
