Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, government documents, news clippings, booklet, telegrams, memos, periodical excerpt & resolutions. As with the previous folder most of items are supportive of Un-American Activities in Congress; alternative views are also present. Examples are: letters (5/22 & 6/2) from Miss Linda Seitz (Senior, Chula Vista High) & Wilson re/ interest in anti-communist literature and the John Birch Society; a conservative constituent (Mrs. Jo Poland) plans to open an Information Center and Library under the name “Conservative Americans” and requests a flag flown over the Capitol; letter (6/21) & reprint copies of Congressional Record (6/14) “Extension of Remarks of Hon. Edgar W. Hiestand – General Walker Rebuked;” letters (May & June) re/ Descanso constituent Mrs. Stille’s anti-communists rant and especially attacks on Kennedy and members of his cabinet; El Cajon constituents Don Mattern & Jim Curto want the Post Office to stop their receiving unsolicited copies of The Socialist Call & National Guardian; letters (May & June) & news excerpt from The San Diego Union (5/24) re/ “U.S. Nazis In Alabama;” letters (May-June) re/ El Cajon constituent Robert Coates is alarmed by the printing of the article noted above & Attorney General Robert Kennedy & the Justice Dept. respond to these concerns about the American Nazi Party; letters (Mar.-Apr.) from constituents re/ the activities of George Lincoln Rockwell; letters (5/12 & 6/5), Proposal for Action & Committee on Un-American Affairs, Rules of Procedure booklet; letters, office note & telegram (10/61) re/ Channel 8 presentation of “Hollywood’s Answer to Communism;” a copy of Congressional Record Proceedings and Debates of the 87 Congress, First Session, “Excerpts From Speeches by Senator Strom Thurmond on Efforts To Gag Military Anti-Communist Speeches and Seminars,” (56 pages) and Wilson Office note “send to Communist Study Groups;” letter (5/17) and copy of Daily Aztec (Vol. 40, No. 115, (5/11) re/ “9 Committee Sponsors Alleged Red Affiliates;” letters (10/4 & 10/19) re/ Chula Vista constituent David F. Smith and Wilson favor showing the film Operation Abolition to young and old; copy of letter (10/2) from Gus Hall tPolitical Affairs (10/61); copy of Organizations Designated Under Executive Order No. 10450 (11/1/54); letters (9/23 & 10/20) & Resolution of San Diego Chapter, Retired Officers Association 13 September 1961 – too much Russian propaganda is being sent through the U.S. Post office; letters (Oct.-Nov.) re/ Wilson sends a number of pamphlets to constituents on Communist propaganda; letter & Resolution (Dec.) from the Council on Christian Social Progress protesting the release by Congressmen, for general distribution, of unproved and unevaluated material secured from the House Committee on Un-American Activities; letters (Sept. & Oct.) & Central Republican Women of San Diego Federated September Newsletter re/ Communist propaganda & the film “Castro, Cuba and Communism;” letters (Dec.) re/ concerns about the Communist menace from the Catholic Freedom Foundation, Edgar N. Eisenhower’s Remarks & copy of the Catholic Foundation’s listing of those committed to stopping Russian strategy & request for membership; a reprint of the Congressional Record – House May 28, 1961 No. 83 re/ pages 7835-7840 & A4271-A4272.
