Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, memorandum, newsletters, a news clipping & a press release; these are filed from May ’63 to Jan. ’61. letters(May – Aug.’63) relating to what Wilson’s referred to as “the San Diego Chamber of Commerce has recently furnished the necessary information required by the Department of Justice to give full study to San Diego’s complaints on Sugar Basing Point Pricing System.” This includes Memorandum For File; letters (Apr.-May 63) re/ Holley Sugar Corp., Chamber of Commerce on Point Pricing System and also personal information on Wilson from his Administrative Assistant; press release from National Republican Congressional Committee’s Issue of the Day (5/24/63) re/ “Sugar – JFK Soaks the Housewife” & letters (5/31 & 6/4/63); letters (3/22 & 3/28/63) re/ “inequities in the base price for sugar;” additional letters (Apr.-May ’63) re/ this topic and concerns of the San Diego Chamber of Commerce; a letter (5/7/63) from Merrill E. Shoup (Chairman of the Holley Sugar Corp.) to Ed Gillenwaters (Wilson’s Admin. Assistant) re/ glad to learn that Gillenwaters was now Wilson’s assistant & reference to Dept. of Justice; letter (rec’d 5/8/63) re/ Union Sugar (San Francisco) notes that Californian is the leading beet sugar producing state and also Corp. report from the Chamber of Commerce; stapled packet of letters & news clipping re/ sugar being imported from Ireland & also personal information on events including reference to Del Mar Race Track, Caliente & 19,000 fans at the Charger game Saturday night; letters (2/7, 11 & 19/62) re/ “the American sugar industry – beets, mainland cane, the U.S. cane sugar refiners, Hawaii, and Puerto Rico – have reached agreement on a program for the amendment and extension of the Sugar Act” & copy of Hawaii Business & Industry, “Gamble May Save Sugar Companies $1 Million” from the Matson Navigation Company; letter (2/28/63) from Norman Foster (Barnes Chase Company) & Edgar M. Gillenwaters’ reply (3/12/63) re/ personal information and discussion on sugar industry.
