Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, office notes, resolutions, Congressional Record, telegrams, address & statement; these are filed from January to November. Topics and issues are: sugar prices and Cuba, imported oil in American flag vessels, GATT conference, cement imports, import duty on typewriters, Canvas and Waterproof Footwear from Japan, improper use of American flags, quotas on frozen shrimp and boycott of Japanese seafood, textile imports of cotton, palm trees from Mexico, raisin and grape industry. Examples are: letters (Jan.) re/ sugar prices and need for cooperation from Castro; letter (1/29) from Seafarers’ Section AFL-CIO to Wilson re/ “American-flag tanker vessels are being excluded from carrying imported oil;” letters & proposed resolution (1/21 & 2/4/60) re/ The Nation-Wide Committee of Industry, Agriculture and Labor sent Wilson background information on GATT related to their “Concurrent Resolution” to amend the 1958 Trade Extension Bill; letters (Nov. 59-Mar.60) re/ export of tallow; letters (Feb.-Mar.’60) re/ import of sugar from Mexico; letters (4/22 & 5/10) and reprint of Congressional Record (Vol. 106, 86th Cong. 2nd Sess. No. 57, 3/29/60) re/ “Freedom of the Press and the Tariff Issue;” letters (Feb.-May’60) re/ U.S. Tariff Commission investigation of typewriters and their importation- Baily Office Machines of San Diego was sent this information by Wilson in response to Baily’s request; letter (6/14) and page 1 & 2 from the Rubber Imports Footwear Conference- in 1957 7 million pairs were imported from Japan- in 1960 121 million pairs were imported; 13 page copy of “Address of Carl Sandburg Before the Joint Session of Congress February 12, 1959;” letters (9/60) from Wilson and J.M. Cheatham (President-Elect, The American Cotton Manufacturers Institute, Inc.) re/ “Statement of Seabury Stanton, President of Berkshire-Hathaway Mills & Chairman, Northern Textile Association” criticizing the Inter-Agency Committee’s report for not helping the industry. “The committee was created to help the industry not hurt it;” letters (Oct.-Nov. ’60) re/ responses to letter from D. M. Rice (SDSC) student for information on Custom Regulations, industrial materials available in this country and import financing. Wilson sent him booklets on these topics.
