Scope and Contents
A collection of letters, telegrams, Congressional Record 88th Cong. 2nd Sess.- 9 page excerpt, post cards, memorandum, news clippings, lists if persons, newsletters, excerpts from periodicals, and other items: these are fil5ed from January to December 1965. Examples are: 10 letters from constituents in support of and in opposition to the House Committee on Un-American Activities; a letter (1/1/65) from Hearvey O’Connor (Chairman, Abolish HUAC) to Wilson challenging the suggestion to investigate unpopular groups left or right as a violation of civil liberties; copy of a speech by Hon. James Utt, “Supreme Court Strikes Down California’s Laws Against Communism,” Congressional Record 88th Cong. 2nd Sess. (not printed at Government expense); letters and post care (July) re/ request for investigation of folk singer Pete Seeger; letters (June & July) & news clipping re/ Communist Youth Training Camp; memorandum, letters and map (May) re/ Cuban Bill of Rights and other information; letters, post card, and news clipping re/ Naval Communication Station’s subscription to Soviet Life and request to have the Student Non-violent coordinating committee investigated; letters (Apr.’65 & Dec. ’64) re/ request for copies of H.Doc. No. 118, opposition to doing business with Communist or Communist-leaning nations and opposition to HUAC investigating the KKK; memorandum, letters and information card (3/65) re/ Chamber of Commerce college essay contest to combat communism on campus and promote conservative politics; letters (2/6 & 3/6/65) re/ support for the HUAC from the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women; letters & news clipping (Feb. & Mar. ’65) re/ “FBI Jails 4 in Threat to Historic Sites;” news clipping “44 Rights Lawyers Turn Lobbyists in Mississippi Case,” The Washington Post, 8/18/65, A6; a dozen copies of “The following five persons are listed as ‘Attorneys for Contestants on the brief filed by the Clerk of the House on August 2;”a letter (8/18/65) from Edward Hunter (Anti-Communist Liaison Inc.) to Wilson and two copies of Tactics Index (July & Aug, 1965, Vol. 2, No. 7) re/ “Action Must Be Based on Ideas Ideas need Reading Study;” letters (Sept.-Dec. ’65) re/ Owen Lattimore case and student request for information on World Communist Movement; letter (11/29/65) from the Catholic Freedom Foundation to Wilson and attached list “110 Catholic Bishops, 96 Congressmen, Warn of a Soviet America;” News Release (11/17/65) – “Rep. Bob Wilson (R-Calif.) today urged President Johnson to enlist the ‘best legal minds’ in the U.S. government to come up with legislation to put controls on the Communist Party in this country;” stapled packet containing letters (April ’65) re/ National Committee advertisement for the repeal of the McCarran Act with attached newspaper listing of 315 signers of the repeal; constituent Gerald R. Valade re/ Supreme Court decision affecting Communist Party registration; note, copy of news clipping and Wilson News Release (Nov.-Dec. ’65) / Wilson urged President Johnson to enlist legal minds to put effective controls on the Communist Party in this country.
