Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, telegrams, post cards & photo copy of news article; these are filed in random fashion but focus mainly on Jan.-Feb. ’61. Examples are: letters (6/20 & 7/10/65) re/ request for copy of Guide to Subversive Organizations & praise for Wilson’s chairmanship of the committee; letters (2/27 & 3/2/61) re/ constituents Mr. and Mrs. John C. Sheppard urge Wilson to abolish HUAC; letters (1/7 & 1/13/61) re/ constituent Mrs. Bernice H. Sands requests Guide to Subversive Organizations & What You Should Know About Communism; telegrams (1/22 & 1/23/61) re/ Barbara Hutchins to Wilson - need 300 copies HUAC most recent reports for National Security Conference Business Professional Women’s Clubs meeting in Palm Spring; post cards & letters (Jan. ’61) re/ constituents Mrs. Genevieve B. Howard, Bernard E. Frost & Mr. & Mrs. Leonard Leeman urge the abolishment of HUAC; letters (Jan.’61) re/ SDSC student request information from Wilson on communism. In his opinion “the committee is entirely ‘Un -American’ in nature and akin to the Witch Hunts of Salem;” letters (Jan.’61) re/ constituent Miss Rose Vollmer’s complaints about HUAC and says it should be abolished; letters (1/23 & 2/21/61) re/ Alpine constituent Mary M. Ball urges Wilson “to choke off the financial aid to that evil thing – the HUAC;” letters (2/24 & 3/2/61) re/ constituent Edwin A. Robinson to Wilson “Please greatly reduce or eliminate altogether the funds allocated to the House Committee on Un-American Activities” it has been more harmful than helpful, in his response Wilson supported the committee – it serves a worthwhile purpose In this great country of ours; letters (1/16 & 1/18/61) constituents Drs. John W. Hardebeck & Kenneth J. McGrath urge Wilson to abolish the committee – they make a mockery of the Bill of Rights with their Police State dictatorship methods; letter (2/22/61) from Mrs. Alice B. Haskins to Congressman Adam Clayton Powell re/ “thanks for your declaration that you will support Congressman Roosevelt’s move for hearings on the proposed budget of the House Committee on Un-American Activities and for eventual abolishment of that committee;” photocopy of excerpts from three sources: Washington Post, Hon. James Roosevelt speech and Herb Caen article in San Francisco Sunday Chronicle.
