Burke Urges Funds For Wharf,” The San Diego Union, Aug. 18, 1959 re/ concerns about Coronado, status of North Island carrier wharf & Mrs. Myska’s newsy comments about the area when she first arrived in 1946; 3 news clippings re/ “Super Carrier Bill Wins Senate Okay,” Evening Tribune & The San Diego Union, Aug. 21, 1959 & “Fund Denied For Carrier Wharf Here – Congress Rejects Project After Navy Indecision,” The San Diego Union, Sept. 4, 1959 – The debate centeed on whether to create the wharf opposite Ballast Point or instead dredge “the harbor entrance to a depth of 40 feet” to allow big carriers to enter the bay and use the east side of North Island; 2 letters from constituent & Fleet Reserve Assn. Shipmate Gordon A. Donald (9/4/59 & 3/20/60) & Wilson’s replies (9/14/59 & 4/7/60) re./ Mr. Donald’s rem-inisces about carrier duty & suggesting the construction of a “finger pier” (drawing attached) on the west of North Island. This would be cheaper than dredging or a wharf. Inside the bay locations for military ships was a risk such as at Pearl Harbor in 1941 and the blocking of the channel; 1 letter (9/25/59) from Adm. A.M. Ekstrom (Commander, Naval Air Force Pacific Fleet, N.A.S., North Island) & Wilson’s reply (12/15/59) re/ more on the Independent news article “mis-reporting” & Wilson’s assurance that the Navy was behind dredging the entrance to facilitate a peir on the east side of the Island; 1 copy of a letter (12/8/59) from Congressman Wilson & VAdm. Ekstrom’s reply (12/15/59) re/ the recent article in the San Diego Independent, the misquote attributed to Wilson about the Admiral, controversy over the “Zuniga Pier Project,” its authorization but lack of funding for FY 60, & now, we should close ranks to support “the other engineering study which decided that an inner-harbor location was the best all-around solution;” 1 letter (1/8/60) from Jack A. Donnelly (Secretary, California Board of Pilot Commissioners, Harbor of San Diego) & Wilson’s reply (1/25/60) re/ the Bd. of Pilot Commissioners volunteered their assistance “in regard to the proposed dredging at North Island for supercarriers;” 2 letters (1/11 & 1/15/60) from Roscoe E. Hazard & Wilson’s reply (1/25/60) re/ political commentary on Nixon campaign financing, contributions by San Diegans & comment from Joe Brennan supporting the carrier dock exterior to San Diego Bay “snug up against the end of Point Loma;” a small packet of letters (Feb.-Ap. 1960) from Coronado constituent Paul H. Hord (RAdm. U.S.N. Ret.), Congressman Wilson, Col. H.E. Sprague (Beach Erosion Board, Army Corps of Engineers), & Capt. P. Corradi (Deputy Chief of Bureau, Bureau of Yards & Docks, Dept. of the Navy) re/ concerns of Coronado residences of the Bay View Estates that the proposed dredging may cause further erosion damage to their properties. Wilson reassured Adm. Hord that the comments of Col. Sprague & Capt. Corradi should dispel the residents fears. Hord seemed to agree in his April letter; 1 letter (3/18/60) from VAdm. Ralph E. Wilson (Deputy Chief of Naval Operations, Logistics, Office of the CNO) re/ “more feasible to accommodate the large carriers within San Diego Bay along-side the Quay Wall in preference to the alternative proposal of constructing a marginal wharf at Zuniga Point;” copy of a letter (3/24/60) from Leon W. Parma & 2 letters (3/25 & 3/29/60) from Capt. P. Corradi (Bureau of Yards & Docks, Dept. of the Navy) & enclosed news clipping – “Hike in Pier Cost Likely,” San Diego Independent, Feb., 2, 1960 re/ continued misunderstanding & confusion on carrier wharf project, etc.; 1 letter (4/11/60) from Coronado constituent Dr. James P. Vernetti & Wilson’s response (4/26/60) re/ a concern that “a pier . . . 7 blocks along the Coronado bay front. . . . is in our front yard.” Wilson attempted to assuage Dr. Vernetti’s fears; 1 letter (5/16/60) from San Diego constituent John D. Armstrong & Wilson’s reply (5/23/60) re/ Mr. Armstrong’s preference for the use of federal funds to support a “commercial jet air field” in San Diego rather than “a super carrier pier at North Island.” Wilson rejected any such change in federal expenditures.
