Scope and Contents

The School of Music and Dance Records document the administrative work of the School, public events, and student performance work.  It dates from 1957-2009. The collection consists of two series: Department Files and Recital Recordings.

The Department Files series consists primarily of paper records documenting the department's administration, but also documenting in part public events put on by the department. It consists of numerous announcements, programs, and flyers advertising the department's recitals, activities, and events. Highlights include a program for The Lowland Sea: A Fold Opera in One Act written by Alec Wilder, departmental newsletters, and a copy of Songs of San Diego State College, a publication of school songs with sheet music that includes "Hail Montezuma" written by noted composer and university faculty member Dr. David Ward-Steinman. It dates from 1957-1993.

The Recital Recordings series documents the performance work of students, faculty, and ensembles at San Diego State. The series consists primarily of audio recordings of undergraduate and graduate recitals, as well as faculty performances, performances by chamber groups and large ensembles, and a few lectures. A small portion of recital recordings are on video. The series dates from 1970-2009. Materials are sorted into three sub-series by format: Audio Cassettes, VHS Tapes, and CDs and DVDs. Each sub-series is filed by Music Library number.
