Scope and Contents

The JuleTone Productions, Inc. Records document rehearsals, stage directions, musical compositions, participants, and venue preparation for JuleTone performances. The Collection consists of sheet music with notations, original lyrics, cast lists, news clippings, photographs, audio recordings, production invoices, invitations, correspondence, stage directions, programs, plaques, and performance DVDs. The majority of the material dates from about 1981 to the mid-2000s, and highlights performances and workshops.  The Collection is divided into four series: JuleTone Production Files (1958-2008), Showbiz! Files (1981-2007), Multimedia Files, and Awards/Plaques.   The JuleTone Production Files are filed into four sub-series: the General Production Files (1958-2008), Annual Production Files (1964-2007), Wedding Files (1991-2003), and Artwork Files (1983-2003). The Annual Production Files are further divided into three other sub-series: Charity Ball Files (1964-2004), Holiday High Files (1985-2007), and San Diego State  University Event Files (1992-2005).  The ShowBiz! Files (1981-2007) are filed into two sub-series: the Workshop Files (1981-2007) and the "Something Else Again" Revue Files (1986).  The Multimedia Files are divided into two sub-series: Photo Files (1958-2007), and DVD Files (1978-1996).

The JuleTone Production Files (1958-2008) document the music and planning for JuleTone productions at charity and private events. This series consists of four sub-series, the General Production Files (1958-2208), the Annual Production Files (1964-2007), the Wedding Files (1991-2003), and the Artwork Files (1983-1999). The General Production Files (1958-2008), arranged chronologically, provide extensive documentation regarding periodic JuleTone performances at charity events for organizations such as the Junior League, YWCA, San Diego Symphony, the Ileitis and Colitis Foundation, and the San Diego Opera.  Dating from the 1980s and 1990s, it includes production invoices, cast lists, original lyrics, sheet music, stage directions, correspondence, and programs; and highlights important San Diego fundraisers, such as "Sunday in the Park," a performance starring former mayor Pete Wilson, which raised money to restore the Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park. The earliest files in the sub-series, dating from the late 1950's to the late 1970s, document Toni Michetti productions prior to the formation of JuleTone. The Annual Production Files (1964-2007) document annual performances by JuleTone, and are divided into three sub-series, the Charity Ball Files (1964-2005), the Holiday High Files (1985-2007), and the San Diego State University Event Files (1992-2005). Each sub-series is filed chronologically, and contains programs, music, lyrics, and cast lists.  The Charity Ball Files document JuleTone performances at Childrens Hospital's annual Charity Ball fundraiser. The Holiday High Files document the annual winter holiday show sponsored by JuleTone. The San Diego State University Event Files document JuleTone performances at university events, including events sponsored by the SDSU Alumni Association and the College of Education. The Wedding Files (1991-2003) document music at specific weddings. These files are arranged alphabetically by the bride's last name, and consist only of sheet music, with scant information regarding the actual wedding.  Lastly, the Artwork Files (1983-1999), arranged alphabetically by topic, document artwork for the JuleTone logo, letterhead, event programs, and signs.  These files contain fragments of logos, business card designs, fonts, sketches, clipart, and rough drafts of programs, flyers, and letterhead.

The Showbiz! Workshop Files (1981-2007) are divided into two sub-series, the Workshop Files (1981-2007), and the "Something Else Again" Revue Files (1986).  The Workshop Files, filed chronologically, document the week-long children, adult, and Holiday High workshops. These files generally include programs, lyrics, sheet music, and participant lists. The "Something Else Again" Files, filed alphabetically, document the Showbiz! 5th Anniversary celebration performance and fundraiser.  These files contain programs, lyrics, sheet music, cast lists, correspondence, and invoices for the production.

The Multimedia Files (1958-2007) include two sub-series, the Photo Files (1958-2007) and the DVD Files (1978-1996). The Photo Files (1958-2007) are arranged chronologically by performance, and encompass all types of JuleTone performances and rehearsals, ranging from fundraisers to private events to Showbiz! workshops. This sub-series consists entirely of photographs and scrapbooks, which provide wonderful visual documentation of Toni Michetti and JuleTone performances, such as "Celebrate," "Sunday in the Park," "To Opera With Love," and "Kicks." When possible, participants in the photos are identified. The DVD Files (1978-1996), also arranged chronologically, likewise visually document JuleTone and Showbiz! performances. The DVDs highlight a few pre-JuleTone productions; all major JuleTone productions, such as "Sunday in the Park," Charity Ball shows, and "Kicks;" Showbiz! workshops and Holiday High performances.  Most of the DVDs date from the 1980s and 1990s.  Many of the DVDs' picture and sound quality are poor due to age.

The Awards/Plaques document the appreciation of JuleTone's performers and clients.  These awards are primarily plaques given to Julie Golden and Toni Michetti from past clients or casts as thanks. This series includes two certificates, several plaques, a signed football, and one small trophy.

Special Collections gratefully acknowledges the generous support given by Julie Golden toward the processing of this collection.

Historical Note

In 1954, Toni Michetti, co-founder of JuleTone Productions, graduated from San Diego State University with a degree in Speech Arts with a focus on theater. Her first show was for the Bachelor's Club in 1958. During the 1960s and 1970s, Michetti directed, choreographed and performed in over twenty charitable events. In 1979, Julie Golden and Michetti performed together in the San Diego chapter of the Junior League's "Celebrate" show. Their collaboration during this performance eventually led to the creation JuleTone Productions in 1981.

Julie Golden and Toni Michetti founded JuleTone Productions, Inc. as a musical theatre production company that provided entertainment for local charities and private events using local talent, including prominent San Diegans, such as Rolf Benirschke, Jim Laslavic, Ron Mix, Willie Buchanon, Pete Wilson, and Valerie Harp. Organizations such as the YMCA, the Balboa Theatre Foundation, Children's Hospital, the SDSU Alumni Association, the San Diego Symphony Association, and the San Diego Rotary Club hired JuleTone entertainment for their fundraisers and events. Michetti and Golden directed, choreographed, and trained all the performers themselves. They also tried to incorporate lyrics and themes relevant to the sponsoring organization into the show. In 2003, JuleTone Productions was renamed the Let's Put On A Show Foundation, and became a non-profit membership organization. The Foundation's goal was "to support charitable causes by using performing arts to help target organizations raise funds in a manner which builds teams, morale and a sense of accomplishment." Later, the Let's Put On A Show Foundation was renamed the JuleTone Foundation.

Golden and Michetti also set up Showbiz! Workshops in May 1981 in order to provide a musical theater experience for anyone interested, and to generate funding for JuleTone Productions and other non-profit organizations. Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney's philosophy of "Let's Put on a Show" inspired the workshops. Showbiz! provided these workshops for both children and adults at a cost of $100 per person. Workshops consisted of 30 performers or less, and lasted 1 week, culminating in a musical revue show with minimal sets and costumes in front of an audience.

Toni Michetti passed way in 1988. Julie Golden retired from the JuleTone Foundation in 2008. The Foundation is no longer active.
