Biographical Note

Allan Shields joined the faculty of San Diego State College in 1949 as Assistant Professor of Philosophy and Psychology, becoming Professor of Philosophy in 1959. In 1954, he left to pursue other academic positions and spent five summers as Ranger-Naturalist in Yosemite National Park. He returned to San Diego State University in 1970 as Professor of Philosophy and retired from that position in 1978.

In addition to teaching, he served for five summers as a seasonal Ranger-Naturalist in Tuolumne Meadows, Yosemite National Park and is the co-owner (with his wife Bernice) of the Jerseydale Ranch Press in Mariposa, California. He is a musician, author and avid horseman. His many essays, articles, poetry and reviews appear in numerous professional and popular journals and books.
