Historical Note
The American Association of University Women was founded in 1881, as the Association of Collegiate Alumni, to advocate for improved standards in women's education and to assist women in their educational and professional pursuits. The AAUW San Diego branch was founded in 1911 as the College Women's Club of San Diego, with membership open to any woman who had been a student in good standing for one year at a recognized college. It joined the AAUW in 1917. The club provided educational programming on topics of interest to its members, in addition to philanthropic and civic work. Early achievements include a scholarship loan fund and raising funds for the establishment of the Neighborhood House, an immigrant settlement house. The club also formed committees to study women's issues as well as issues of general social import. Today AAUW San Diego serves residents of metropolitan San Diego, with several other branches in the suburbs and unincorporated areas of the county. According to its website, the organization's mission is to promote equity for women and girls through advocacy, education, research and philanthropy. It awards scholarships to local college students and advocates for women's issues at the local, state and national level. Also, since 1998 the branch has operated Tech Trek, a week-long summer camp for girls in middle school that promotes science, technology engineering and math careers.
