Scope and Content Note

The Craig Baldwin Collection documents Baldwin’s career as an experimental filmmaker and includes newspapers, magazines, zines, journals, catalogs, and publications. The majority of material dates from the late-1970s to the early 2000s and is tied to the content of Baldwin’s films. The collection is divided into four series: Conspiracies (1919-2009), Film and Media (1954-2024), Art (1987-2022), and Publications (1966-2023).

The Conspiracies series includes four sub-series, all filed alphabetically: Aliens and Space (1980-2009), Fringe (1919-2007), Far-Left (1974-2009), and Far-Right (1972-1993). The Aliens and Space sub-series covers conspiracies related to UFOs, space exploration, alien existence, and alien interaction with humans. The bulk of the sub-series dates to the 1990s. A major feature of this sub-series is the files from Unarius Academy of Science, a San Diego-based organization with a focus on interdimensional science. Documents include books, posters, newspapers, flyers, and pamphlets. The Fringe sub-series documents conspiracies that are not aligned with extremist political groups or related to aliens and space. The bulk of the sub-series is from the 1990s. Themes include information on fortune telling, alternative media, pseudoscience, and political-based conspiracies that are not inherently tied to a specific political party. The series includes magazines, journals, newspapers, zines, and catalogs. The Far-Left sub-series contains political conspiracies tied to known fringe leftist organizations or representing fringe leftist beliefs. Of the dated items, a majority come from the 1990s. Topics covered include conspiracies on political assassinations, criticisms of the American and British governments, criticisms of the Christian far-right, and catalogs of leftist media. Documents include newspapers, journals, magazines, zines, pamphlets, catalogs, and comics. The Far-Right sub-series contains documents related to extreme conservative political groups and theories. Materials include neo-Nazi propaganda, Christianity-based pamphlets, conservative catalogs, and Armageddon conspiracies. One folder in this sub-series, The Larsen File, disrupts alphabetical order to be next to The Crystal Ball, as it was formerly named.

The Film and Media (1954-2024) series documents events, coverage, and publications related to film, including items concerning Baldwin’s career. While Baldwin is mentioned in some of the materials within the Film and Media series, most of the included documents pertain to independent, local films and cinemas. The series is split into six sub-series, all organized alphabetically: Independent (1976-2000), Exploitation (1989-2006), Journals, Magazines, Catalogs (1971-2001), Zines (1994-2024), Events (1989-2023), and Sound (1954-2000). The Independent sub-series includes journals, magazines, zines, event flyers, and catalogs related to films in the independent genre. There are also documents on independent television in this sub-series. The Exploitation subseries contains journals, magazines, zines, event flyers, and catalogs related to films in the exploitation genre, including adult films. The Journals, Magazines, Catalogs sub-series includes documents that are not specific to the independent or exploitation genres of film, with many items falling into the experimental genre. The Zines sub-series contains zines pertaining to film and television, including technical issues. The Events sub-series contains all flyers and booklets related to film-focused events. Many of the materials are booklets corresponding to film festivals or local theater clubs. The Sound sub-series contains all documents related to music and radio. The majority of items in this sub-series are from 1994 to 2000. This sub-series includes catalogs, sound-related journals and magazines, music-related zines, and radio guidebooks.

The Art (1987-2022) series is split into two sub-series, both alphabetically organized: Exhibits, Installations, Events (1993-2018) and Arts and Media Criticism (1987-2022). Some of the documents in this series cover critiques of Baldwin’s work. The items in this series pertain to media topics outside of film and sound. Many documents are research papers or journal articles. The Exhibits, Installations, Events sub-series contains promotional materials for and booklets pertaining to art events. There are some documents promoting art-based workshops. The Arts and Media Criticism sub-series contains magazines and journals specific to media criticism and analysis, research papers on specific examples of media, and general counterculture publications.

The Publications series contains materials with little connection to the other series. Several of the items are singular issues of zines connected to human culture. There are several historical comic books and one children's book from major publishers. Two comics are religious in nature, but are not considered fringe media. Included in this subseries are product catalogs unrelated to conspiracies or media, zines, comics, books, and news clippings.

Biographical Note

Craig Baldwin was born in Oakland, California. He attended UC Davis, UC Santa Barbara, and graduated from San Francisco State University where he also received his MA. His early film interests included Super 8 and found footage. While at university, Baldwin became interested in political activism which has influenced his filmmaking. He also began collecting a large number of films. Baldwin’s films are largely recombinatory and use film from his personal archive. Several of his productions, such as RocketKitKongoKit (1986) and Mock Up on Mu exhibit recombinatory collage film. His most well-known work, Tribulation 99: Alien Anomalies Under America (1991), is a pseudo-documentary commenting on American intervention in Latin America done in Baldwin’s recombinatory style. ¡O No Coronado! (1992) tells the story of Francisco Vázquez de Coronado but interspersed with science fiction-style music and clips from dramatized historical films. Baldwin’s films are largely experimental in nature and predominantly combine historical elements with science fiction.

In 2003, Baldwin founded Other Cinema, an archive with weekly film events, located in San Francisco, California. Other Cinema was inspired by the underground screening events of The RAD, The MAD, The BAD for Artists’ Television Access, an organization in which Baldwin was a founding member in 1984. Other Cinema is in part known for its eclectic calendars, the contents of which have been digitized since Spring 2000 on Other Cinema’s website. As of November 2025, Other Cinema is still active and shows independent, experimental, and exploitative films.
