Scope and Contents
The collection includes minutes of meetings, correspondence, annual and monthly reports, fiscal materials, personnel files, statistical data, files on programs, published materials, photographs, and movie films. Most materials post-date 1960. It has been arranged into three major series, with numerous sub-series.

Copyright resides with the creator(s) of materials contained in the collection or their heirs. The nature of archival collections is such that multiple creators are often applicable and copyright status may be difficult or even impossible to determine. In any case, the user must assume full responsibility for any use of the materials, including but not limited to, obtaining publication rights and copyright infringement. When requesting images from Special Collections & University Archives for publication, we require a signed agreement waiving San Diego State University of any liability in the event of a copyright violation.
Biographical or Historical Information
The Board of Health for the City of San Diego was created by a charter ordinance on June 5, 1876. At that time, the City Board consisted of the City Trustees and a Health Office appointed by the Trustees. In the early 1920’s, the City formed a Health Department. A County Department of Public Health was organized in 1933. In 1953, the City and County departments were consolidated into one, and as such it had remained. Separately and (after 1953) together, these organizations have overseen public health services in San Diego County for a century. The present Department administors hospitals, clinics, laboratories, mental health facilities, health education and treatment programs, and medical training programs.
