Scope and Contents

This was a large bulky folder and the items are filed from 1965 back to 1957. It contains letters, memorandum, a booklet, postal cards, office notes and telegrams. A majority of the items are dated 1958. A few items selected for 1965 are: 3 letters (Nov.) re/ constituent Louis E. Maringer requests a copy of the Federal & Postal Employees pay raise bill, 89-11 and Wilson complied along with sending him two other recently passed acts dealing with Civil Service; 2 letters (Nov.) re/ Mrs. Lloyd Baldridge requests a copy of the “Aerospace Corporation, a report of the Armed Services Subcommittee for Special Investigations” and Wilson complied; a memorandum from Arlene (Wilson’s S.D. office) & a letter from Wilson (10/25 & 11/5) re/ Mrs. Louise Fuer (S.D. County Dept. of Education) requested a copy of Public Law 88-105; letters (10/27 & 11/4) re/ a request from Melvin L. Murphy (School of Social Work, San Diego State College for a copy of the Joint Economic Committee Study Paper No. 7 entitled “European Social Security Systems;” a letter (12/14) from Professor of Microbiology Claude E. ZoBell (Scripps Institution of Oceanography) & Edgar M. Gillenwaters’ reply (12/23) re/ a request for a copy of the Agricultural Yearbook, CONSUMERS ALL. Professor ZoBell also indicated – “We appreciate your initiative and support of legislation designed to promote the science of the sea, more popularly known as oceanography here in San Diego;” letters & a booklet (Dec.) re/ a request from Reverend Kathryn M. Breese (First Church of Religious Science, Chula Vista) & Edgar M. Gillenwaters’ reply for the State Dept. booklet, Freedom From War The United States Program For General and Complete Disarmament In A Peaceful World (reprint 1961 & 19 pages); other requested items include military pay act, bulletins on beef cattle, National Conference on Law and Poverty (6/23-25), Farm Bill PL 89-11 re/ dairy farming, Frank Ferrone (SDSC) needs any material on the pros and cons of Medicare, college student Miss Charlotte Gallagher needs information on the nation’s welfare laws for a term paper for a class in the History and Philosophy of Social Welfare, Wilson requests a copy of Apartheid and the United Nations to send to Lyn Nofziger, booklets on Aviation; October letters include items such as: copyright laws, information on San Diego County for a senior high school student in San Mateo, the Highway Beautification Act (S. 2084), a bill to establish a national lottery, the Vocational Education Act of 1963, interest in the honor code problem at the Air Force Academy and Section 24 of the Federal Reserve Act. A few items selected for 1958 are: letters (9/27 & 10/10) re/Dennis L. Karnowski, an 8th grade student at La Mesa Junior High School, requested information of the Constitution of the United States & other countries; 3 similar letters (Dec.) from 8th grade La Mesa students Michael J. Rogers, Carolyn Aldridge & Carol Nollingsead; a letter ((rec’d 12/12) from Wilson’s mother & Wilson’s letter (12/17) re/ a request from his mother’s friend Mrs. Moore of Imperial Beach for a copy of the U.S. Constitution to place in the Mar Vista School; a letter (12/29) from Arnold Klaus (Asst. Mgr., S.D. Chamber of Commerce) for a copy of the Highway Act of 1958; letters (11/8 & 11/20) re/ Alfonso Gonzales (Dept. of Geography, SDSC) congratulates Wilson on his re-election & requests a copy the 1956 Minerals Yearbook; Alan S. Mishne (Loans Administrator, S.D.S.C.) requests copies of PL 85-864, National Defense Act of 1958 & congratulates Wilson on his re-election; letters (12/2 & 12/5) re/ Susan Shields (8th grade, La Mesa Junior High) & Wilson’s reply re/ “enclosed several booklets which will helpful to you in your study of American History;” 3 more single page letters (Oct. & Nov.) re/ La Mesa Junior High students Patrick Murray, Charles Crossland & Maryann Hanson need information on the Constitution; postal card (11/14) re/ University of San Diego Library requests 3 volume set of Minerals Yearbook & the Atoms for Peace 1958 Yearbook; letters (Nov.) re/ American Tunaboat Assn. requests copies of Congressman Patman’s “How to Obtain Financing Under the Small Business Investment Act of1958” & Secretary Catherine Parham’s remark that “Mr. Wilson is ‘snowbound’ in Alaska;” letters, notes & Library of Congress Request for Research form (Oct.-Nov.) re/ request for Congressional Hearings from Asst. Professor of Economics R. E. Barckley (Economics Research Center, S.D.S.C.); letter (10/20) from T. G. Goetz (Dir., Veterans’ Service Dept., S.D. County) to Wilson requesting two copies of Title 38, U.S. Code, Veterans’ Benefits, House Committee Print No. 240; Nov. office note to Cathy re/ send 12 copies of H.R. 3260 to two constituents, one from Imperial Beach, the other from Coronado; a letter (9/25) from L. J. Wadsworth (Civil Defense and Disaster Organization. Gillespie Field, S.D. County) to Wilson re/ “Please send us some extra copies of Federal Law 875 and Federal Law 606;” 2 letters (Oct.) re/ Section 132B of the Forand Bill that “deals with excise taxes on dues and assessments paid to country clubs, social clubs, etc.” is needed by San Diego attorney William W. Fox; letters (Sept. & Oct.) re/ the secretary of N.F.L. City and recent Social Security legislation; August letters & postal cards cover enquires about such topics as: Chamber of Commerce request, Fleet Reserve Assn. Day receives booklets from Wilson as to the duties of members of Congress, La Jollan Captain Paul Green (Ret.) is send a copy of PL 56, 85th Congress re/ V.A. Hospitalization for retired veterans; March’s correspondence covers such items as: “Protecting Your Business Against Dishonesty” and “Basic Accounting for Small Partnerships” was sent to Rexford Hall (W.D. Hall Co,, El Cajon), the Republican Women’s Club of Pacific Beach requests a copy of House Resolution 8381 – amendments to IRC of 1954, Dr. F. A. Bonaventura is sent a copy of “Record of Italians in the United States” from the Congressional Record, Merrel A. Taylor (Asst. Professor of Zoology, SDSC) is sent U.S. National Museum Bulletin N. 211, entitled “Life Histories of North American Blackbirds, Orioles, Tanagers, and Allies,” La Mesa 8th grade students Bruce Squires & Miss Nancy Martin are sent booklets on the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, the Director of Veterans’ Services (S.D. County) is sent 6 copies of House Committee Print No. 173; El Cajon constituent Bernard Silbernagel is sent reprints on the Foreign Aid Program, La Mesa 8th grade student John Weeks is sent the pamphlet “Our American Government” and a constituent requests a copy of the Selective Service Act showing sections which would exempt a man, “Memo to Marge from Marge O’” re/ personal information, requests for Housing & Home Owners’ Loan Acts and a request for H.J. Res. 541 re/ seawater conversion on a commercial basis; February’s correspondence covers such items as: Coronado constituent’s interest in more material from House UnAmerican activities investigations and a note from Marge to Leon; 8th grade La Mesa Junior High student, Blanche Costello is sent documents as well as an autographed picture of Wilson and so is La Mesa student Dave Wilkinson, request for material on Genocide Convention Hearings by the Senate, missing Economic Report of the President as sent to SDSC Supervisor of Technical Processes, Santee resident & La Mesa Junior High student Miss Judith McCoy is sent booklets on American Government and ditto for La Mesan Miss Carol Chase, the Fleet Reserve Assn. requests information on several H.R. bills on items related to their membership and Mrs. Marjorie C. Bickley (Vitality Foods Store) requests Agricultural Handbook No. 8; January’s correspondence covers such items as: Jimmy Key of Lakeside requests pamphlets on Meteorology as a profession, a San Diego constituent, David C. Gibson, requests documents on photographic investigation of combustion, cooling of Rocket Engines & Properties of Pure Diatomic Gases, requests for information on H.R. 9050 and widows and children of Spanish American War Veterans, request for two copies of the “Economic Report of the President” – they were rather scarce, Leon Parma replied, request for “Digest of Insurable Loans,” a Scripps Institution of Oceanography request for hearings on Tax Exempt Foundations was referred by Wilson’s office to the Superintendent of Documents, Assist. Professor of Geography Charles C. Yahr is sent the government documents he requested, La Mesa Junior High student Bill Hendricks is sent material on government and an autographed picture of Wilson, the American Federation of Government Employees is sent a copy of the “U.S. Government Purchasing Directory” – attached to these letters are 10 “Five Cents” Supt. of Documents coupons, Wilson sends constituent Albert J. Fuson a copy of a booklet entitled “Education in the USSR” and LCDR R. J. Bell ( Naval Reserve Indoctrination Office, NAS, North Island) is sent a number of documents which he requested.
