Scope and Contents

A collection of letters, resolutions, a news clipping and government reports: these are filed from 1953-1956. Examples are: a letter (1/15/53) from T.H. Sexton (S.D. County Clerk) to Wilson re/ “I am enclosing two certified copies of a resolution adopted by the Board of Supervisors on January 13, 1953, petitioning you to request a study and corrective action to prevent beach erosion at Imperial Beach” – see attached, as well as a letter (2/3/53) from Major Gen. S. D. Sturgis, Jr. (Acting Chief of Engineers, Dept. of the Army) acknowledging receipt of these resolutions; 2 copies of “Information Circular on Cooperative Studies of Beach Erosion and Federal Participation in Construction of Protective Works,” Dept. of the Army, Corps of Engineers, 1952 (8 pages each); a letter (2/27/53) from S.D. County Chief Admin. Officer T. M. Heggland to the Members of the Board of Supervisors re/ “Representative Bob Wilson called on February 27 to report that efforts were being made in Washington to the get the Army Engineers’ Erosion Board to study. . . the problems around Imperial Beach and the Mission Bay Entrance;” letters (3/3 & 3/6/53) & a residents’ petition re/ beach erosion at Imperial Beach & Wilson’s response; a copy of Wilson’s letter (3/27/53) to Richard O. Eaton (Beach Erosion Board, Washington, D.C.) re/ “a formal request for an estimate as to the costs involved in making a survey of the beach erosion problem in Imperial Beach . . . [&] at Ocean Beach, in the City of San Diego;” a news clipping re/ “Imperial Erosion Project Pressed” (Evening-Tribune, 3/3/53); letters (3/17, 18 & 26/53) re/ Wilson & the Board of Supervisors’ letter to the Beach Erosion Bd. in Washington re/ “a petition signed by more than five hundred persons”on Imperial Beach erosion; a “Report on Effects of Sewage Discharge from International Outfall Sewer on Imperial Beach,” Dec. 1953 (23 pages + maps, charts and appendices); a copy of a Wilson letter (7/2/56) to California Assemblyman Jack Schrade re/ the serious condition of the beach at Imperial Beach and efforts in Congress to have this resolved; 2 copies of House Report No. 2639, 84th Cong., 2nd Sess. Re/ “Report of the Committee of Public Works on H. R. 12080” (7/7/56) – 75 pages each; a copy of State of California Dept. of Public Works, Views and Recommendations of State of California on Proposed Report of the Chief of Engineers, United States Army on Beach Erosion Control, Cooperative Study of Oceanside, Ocean Beach, Imperial and Coronado San Diego County, California, January, 1956 (17 pages).
