San Diego Jewish Newspapers Collection
Scope and Contents
The San Diego Jewish Newspapers Collection consists of Jewish newspapers published in the San Diego region from 1948 to 1987. About half of the collection consists of bulletins and newspapers from the East County (54th St.) and Lawrence Family Jewish Community Centers published from 1959 to 1986 as Center-Scribe, CENTER PIECE, and CENTERFOLD. Other newspapers published by the local Jewish press, social organizations, and student groups include the B'nai B'rith Record (Southern California B'nai B'rith Council), The Bulletin (San Diego United Jewish Fund), L'Chayim (UC San Diego students), Southwest Jewish Press, and UJF Reporter (United Jewish Federation of Greater San Diego). Non-San Diego publications include a single issue of The Lasallite (De La Salle College, Philippines). The holdings for each title are incomplete, with the dates given only indicating the earliest and latest issue in the collection. The collection is arranged alphabetically.

Historical Note
The Jewish Community Center Movement, advocated by Rabbi Mordecai Kaplan in his book "Judaism as a Civilization," was the basis for the founding of centers all over the country, as non-religious communal centers for Jewish cultural, sport, and social activities. The Jewish Community Centers of San Diego started as a store front in North Park in the late 1940s or early 1950s and moved to 54th St (East County) in 1957. In the mid 1980s the Lawrence Family JCC was opened in University City.
